Summary

Producer, composer, and arranger Thom Bell on this edition of Fresh Air. He was one of the principal architects of the Sound of Philadelphia. Bell was born in Jamaica and moved to Philadelphia at age five. He planned to become a classical conductor, but in his early 20s, he was signed by Cameo Records to create a Philadelphia version of Motown. His first hits were with the Delfonics: "La La La Means I Love You" and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind". He produced the Stylistics' debut album, worked with the O'Jays and the Spinners, and later went on to collaborate with solo artists including Johnny Mathis, Bob Marley, and Elton John. This year, Bell was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Then, classical music critic Lloyd Schwartz reviews a new documentary, Ballets Russes, just out on DVD. It tells the story of ballet after the death of Diaghilev, who founded and ran the company until 1929. (Broadcast Date: October 2, 2006)
