Because Audible was not granted digital rights to today's broadcast, and because the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is approaching, we present this great archive program with historian Douglas Brinkley, Reverend Willie Walker, Father Anthony De Conciliis, Police Lieutenant Kevin Judice, novelist Alice Sebold, and trumpeter Gregory Davis. Douglas Brinkley is one of the residents of New Orleans who was displaced in the hurricane. He left the city just after the hurricane hit but returned to help with rescue efforts. He has begun documenting the catastrophe, and is collecting oral histories. Brinkley plans to write a book, tentatively titled The Great Deluge. Reverend Willie Walker of Noah's Ark Church in New Orleans helped with rescue efforts. Father Anthony De Conciliis, a Catholic priest, was inaugurated president of Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans on August 26, 2005. He spent two days and a night in the Superdome after the hurricane. Kevin Judice, a Lieutenant in the Narcotics Division of the New Iberia, Louisiana police dept. He spent eight days rescuing people in New Orleans. Alice Sebold's commentary "Living with the Dead" appeared in the September 11, 2005 edition of The New York Times. She is the author of the novel, The Lovely Bones and the memoir, Lucky. Gregory Davis of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has been with the group since its inception in 1977. The Dirty Dozen is known for revitalizing the New Orleans brass band sound by incorporating funk, jazz, gospel, and rock. (Original Broadcast Date: September 16, 2005)
