About this listen

It is 1936 and Spain is on the brink of civil war. Across Europe, young men are enlisting in the International Brigade to free their Spanish brethren from the grip of fascism, leaving sisters and lovers at home.

But not all women are content to be left behind. In Britain, Charlotte McBain and Libby Forbes, friends from opposite sides of the class divide, are determined to do what they can; in Spain, Rosita García Díaz, fiercely loyal to her family and country, cannot stand by and watch. Three brave women, inspired by patriotism, idealism, love and even revenge, dare to go into battle against tradition and oppression.

Tying them all together is Jo, Libby's granddaughter. Five decades later she travels to Spain hoping to make sense of a troubling letter hidden among her grandmother's possessions. What she learns will change all of their lives forever.

Deceit, heartbreak and a longstanding fear of reprisals must all be overcome if the deeds of the forgotten women are to be properly honoured.

A Wonderful Story Teller

This story about the Spanish Civil War was a fascinating insight into the bravery of the British people who volunteered to help protect innocent civilians in parts of the country in the 1930s.

Bittersweet

This is a story about a painting in a gallery found by Jo who found it in her grandmother’s attic. A mysterious man called Anton questions the legitimacy of the painting as he possesses what he says is the original. The owner of the gallery is quick to make it clear that any problems re the gallery bring sued would be placed with Jo.

Jo is intrigued to investigate the history behind the painting which means following Anton to Spain. So Jo, with her relationship breakdown decides to make the trip. Is she prepared for the horrors she would discover? Now it dawns on Jo, why her grandmother Libby is reluctant to talk about it.

What we discover is Rosita, Anton’s grandmother who is not very well and how the painting connects Libby and Rosita and their friend Charlotte and how a good deed of trying to help the disadvantaged in Spain going through the civil war nearly cost them all their lives.

Great story from a favourite author

My first audio book on whispersync mode...nearly gave up mid novel as did not enjoy the narration but when the story threads came together it was well worth the perseverance. Will look out for this author again for sure though

Terrible narration

The story seems to be the sort of thing I would like to read but I can’t go on listening to the awful narration.

Not impressed poor quality sound

Poor sound recording. Not very easy to listen to. Second book I have started out of 3 that I couldn't recommend in recording or content.

Disappointing

Perhaps I expected too much of this one and I found the narration difficult to get on with. I didn’t warm to any of the characters and learnt little of the Spanish Civil war. However, if your expectations are more geared around the dynamics of a seemingly dysfunctional friendship group, for which there is a later reason explained, and you enjoy a story across locations with past and more modern threads you might get on better with it!

computer generated narration

really hard to listen to . the static pace makes me think the narration is done by an audio programme and not a real person. each word is an even space from the next. No relation to the content. Makes it really hard to listen to and understand. Enjoying the story but I'm reading it not listening to it. Shame.
