Summary

A woman ahead of her time, Molly Murphy is determined to be a private detective. Having inherited the cases of her deceased mentor, Paddy Reilly, she's following philandering husbands, tracking down a runaway Dublin debutante, and working in a sweatshop to discover who's purloining dress designs.

None of her jobs seem dangerous...at first. When a woman's body is fished out of the East River, Molly fears it's the missing society girl. Then Molly's sometime beau, police captain Daniel Sullivan, reveals that another corpse may be the girl's scalawag lover, Mike Kelly. But Molly has to know their identities for certain.

Now as threads of passion and greed weave a tapestry of violence, Molly descends into the underworld of the gangs of New York. It's no place for a lady, and even a scrappy Irish lass may need more than her street smarts to get the truth...and get out alive.

Easy listening

Not a modern set of stories, but has a charm, to many risks going on , so some parts too unbelievable, which rather distracts from over all story.

For the Love of Mike

This continues to be another silly detective story where she puts herself in danger to find out the two commissions she has been asked For, plus a whole lot more. Read brilliantly by Lara Hutchinson.

Unlikeable characters

I bought a few of the Molly Murphy mysteries based on liking Her Royal Spyness. Unfortunately they don't have the charm of that series and I find both Molly and Daniel pretty unlikeable characters. Molly is right up there in too stupid to live territory, she's always doing something idiotic and reckless and the reader is obviously supposed to find her spunky and go-getting. Daniel is aggressive, he shouts and grabs too often, and he supposedly loves her but is too much of a coward to get rid of his fiancee. I just can't like him.

I've listened to 2 books and I don't like the narrator much, not a great deal of range in characters and in the case of this particular books some of the characters are more goodness gracious me than Oy ve!, so although the Irish accent is OK, all of the Irish pretty much sound the same and there's really not much facility with other accents.

On the whole, a bit of a fail and I'll be looking into returning the books I haven't read yet.
