About this listen

Lennie's great-grandfather played for the Cheetahs. So did his grandfather. So did his dad. They're footy legends.

Lennie knows he's not legend material. When Calvin Calamari, a specky player, drop-punts in from up north into the Cheetahs' under-15 footy team, Lennie sees a way out. Calvin's cool, Lennie's laid-back, the family's happy, but there's another big problem they all need to solve.

Editor reviews

In Footy Shorts, athletic genius seems to have skipped a generation. Margaret Clark's bench-riding teen hero Lennie cannot measure up to his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father, who all played legendary footy/soccer for the Cheetahs. But Clark's series for young readers wouldn't be Shorts without a life-changing twist.

Mark Mitchell authentically becomes first-person narrator Lennie, who goes from being stampeded on the field to realizing what he truly desires to do with his future after he meets barefooted soccer talent Calvin Calamari. In Mitchell's microphone, the exaggerated, melodramatic emotions of the boy hero enhance the audiobook's sense of humor without sacrificing its psychological realism.
