About this listen

'Fantasy as it ought to be written' GEORGE R.R. MARTIN

Tom Badgerlock has been living peaceably in the manor house at Withywoods with his beloved wife Molly these many years, the estate a reward to his family for loyal service to the crown.

But behind the facade of respectable middle-age lies a turbulent and violent past. For Tom Badgerlock is actually FitzChivalry Farseer, bastard scion of the Farseer line, convicted user of Beast-magic, and assassin. A man who has risked much for his king and lost more…

On a shelf in his den sits a triptych carved in memory stone of a man, a wolf and a fool. Once, these three were inseparable friends: Fitz, Nighteyes and the Fool. But one is long dead, and one long-missing.

Then one Winterfest night a messenger arrives to seek out Fitz, but mysteriously disappears, leaving nothing but a blood-trail. What was the message? Who was the sender? And what has happened to the messenger?

Suddenly Fitz's violent old life erupts into the peace of his new world, and nothing and no one is safe.

This felt like one long intro to the new series. The narration could have been better, the narration of fitz seemed young and lacked depth for me and the female narrators little girl voice could be grating at times.
I don't regret buying, as I think the story will hot up in the next book and Hobb is always good, but I had very high expectations that weren't quite met.

Not as engaging as the previous books

Fitz and the Fool return to one another. But this book brings together years of Fitz living out his dream. time passes quickly through the beginning of the book like no other chapter in their lives. This almost feels like it is from another author. But eventually once the story catches up with the time line the great storytelling returns. This book is focused on Fitz and his daughter Bee and takes time to get going but like all the chapters I have moved straight on to the next installment with anticipation.

Fitz & The fool return

Maybe the best one yet. Not sure. They are all so good. Both written and audio. But, I think this is the best performance so far.

Really enjoying the fool series of books. This one is as good as the rest, but some of the narration is a bit off-putting. It’s almost like the narrator is reading it for the very first time and places emphases in strange places! Otherwise, highly engaging and enjoyable stuff!

Great yarn, some stilted narration
