About this listen

The acidly funny first book starring the subversive sleuth in one of the most successful mystery series of all time. Fletch is an investigative reporter whose methods are a little unorthodox. Currently he's living on the beach.

He's taking more than a little flak from his editor. She doesn't appreciate his style. Or the expense account items he's racking up. Or his definition of the word "deadline". Or the divorce lawyers who keep showing up at the office. So when multimillionaire Alan Stanwyk offers Fletch the job of a lifetime, which could be worth a fortune, he's intrigued and decides to do a little investigation. What he discovers is that the proposition is anything but what it seems.

Fletch, both funny and sardonic.

very well read, really liked the irony, simple story that needs thinking about. Worth a listen.

unusual story telling.

This story set in the 70s was different to the books I normally read. It was Gritty and told in journalism style. The narrators voice was pleasant enough but would have helped if he had changed tone to break down the sentence as it rolled into one.
saying that I enjoyed the story.

Meet Fletch, a street-smart reporter

Fletcher is a reporter that is currently investigating a local drug problem. Confused by Alan Stanwyk as one of the addicts, Fletcher is offered a lot of money by Alan to kill him. Fletcher accepts the proposal as he realises there's a good story behind whatever is going on with Stanwyk's life.

I was about to give this book 3 stars, but since it was written in the 70s I'm cutting it some slack. Fletcher is a fun and witty character, but there's too much of a James Bond vibe happening with the ladies around him. It is weird to realise that we now have all information we need at the distance of a thumb, and some decades ago it took days to perform a proper research. I liked Fletcher and the cozy mystery, even though I figured it all out before the end. The Audible version is pretty good and available for free for subscribers.

Terrific Story

This was a really good read. Well crafted, well written and brilliantly narrated I regularly laughed out loud and the absence of stereotypes of any variety maintained interest throughout.

excellent read could not put it down

I enjoyed the story line, characters and narration. Fletcher has me enthralled ;
I'm intriguingly wrapped up in his abilities to unpick complex patterns .
I've just downloaded the very next book in the series and can't wait to get into it.

So much dialogue it was like listening to a play

This is such a dialogue heavy book, at times it felt like listening to a play. An alright story, at times gripping, at times rather dated, but nevertheless brilliantly narrated. Not too sure I would listen to the sequels, but it passed the time.

Great story and highly amusing in places.

They say there is a little of the author in a lead character, if true, Gregory McDonald must be some kinda guy.

Clever story brilliantly read

The man reading this story could make instructions for a stain remover sound scintillating. That said it’s a fun yarn but agree with other reviews that most female characters feel badly drawn and dated. But the star of the book is reporter Fletch and his cracking of two fascinating cases with lots of intriguing details.

Rapscallion gumshoe

Stumbled upon this while looking for a freebie between credits. Fun Sam Spade type story. Best if not taken too seriously. Might see what Fletch is up to in the next book.
