About this listen

Josh and Emily Flanagan return to their hometown in upper Michigan to open a funky antique shop, which they hope will provide a sane and comfortable retirement. Both have pursued successful careers in Manhattan: she as an appraiser of antiques for an auction house, and he as an insurance adjuster in the field of art and antiques.

A man seeking to purchase an antique doll for his ailing grandchild opens up a Pandora's Box of hidden family secrets and intrigue that results in bitter hostility and murder. Josh and Emily, through brilliant deduction and imaginative enterprise, discover the clues that lead to the solution that lies at the heart of this mystery. As characters they are similar in conception to the witty bantering loving couple, Nick and Nora Charles of the famed Thin Man series created by the mystery writer Dashiell Hammett.

"Step back in time to the way it was"

Any additional comments?

The idyllic town of Lakeside Falls, with it's superb skiing slopes in winter and courful country in summer, renowned for the cherry orchards, is a prime target for tourists and now the retirement home of the Flanagans, returned after years working away in the Big City. He, Josh, had been an insurance investigator and old habits die hard: he still pokes his nose Into anything considered a mystery - and somstimes gets it broken.
When a customer arrives in their curiosity antique shop looking for a very specific old doll for his sick granddaughter, dollar signs dangle in front of their eyes - the promise of money the Flanagans badly need. But, a!though the doll is found, Josh is not happy with the way it was acquired. Then the previous owner dies unexpectedly: of course there must be foul play!
This is a delightfully twisted tale of who if anyone, dispatched the much loved e!derly matriarch. But the real joy comes from the numerous characters who live in Lakeside Falls and in particular the repartee between Josh and his vibrant wife, Emily. If you enjoy puns and quick fire humerous dialogue you are in for a terrific treat.
It would be so easy to lose much of this wordplay fun, which often relies on similarity of sound but differences of meaning, when transferring the text from page to audio, but Kevin Scollin does a magnificent job. His voice is pleasant, easy to hear. His character voices are easy to distinguish in conversation. And above all he allows the punning and repartee to shine out.
This is a book of luxurious enjoyment for anyone who loves a good mystery, or comedy, or sparkling good characterisation. It has all three and much more. I was extremely fortunate in receiving a complementary copy of Mr.Adler's book , via Audiobook Boom, from the author, narrator or publisher, in exchange for an honest review. This I have given. I wish only that I had been better able to convey it's wonxerful writing and fantastic fun. Highly recommended.
