Summary
Corbin is an adventurer; he just hasn’t realized it. He was born in the wrong age - an era where the world has already grown tame.
With the advent of fully immersive virtual reality, however, that’s all going to change.
A revolutionary new game - Chronicle - makes much bolder claims than the competition. It offers a perfect simulation in a new world with quests, magic, monsters, and gods - but Chronicle’s biggest draw is something irresistible: While players are logged in, they have extra time to live.
In Corbin’s world, he may be average; he may work hard for no recognition; he may never catch a break and he may seem trapped - but a new world brings new opportunities, and extra time presents an extra chance. Perhaps he’ll find that he’s not so average after all.

Interesting start to this series
The focus of this book was very much on the in-game stuff, it is unclear if the author intends to split his focus to expand on the real world more in subsequent books, but if that is the style you prefer with these types of book then it might not be an ideal fit for you.
The in-game part of this book amounts to a fairly standard fantasy world with the magic system being well-realised and having some unique elements to it as well, watching the main character slowly come to grips with it actually helps to draw you into the story quite well.
Another thing that draws you into this book is the performance of the narrator, his range of voices for the characters ensures that they are suitably distinctive and he enhances the overall story of the book greatly.
Overall, I found this an enjoyable listen and look forward to subsequent ones in the series.

I need money and I want power.
This first book of the new Chronicle series was a disappointment. Don't get me wrong: the narration by Nick Podehl was superb -well modulated and paced, expressively delivered and with appropriately voiced individual characters - even the female protagonists sounded very, well, female!. The story line was okay, too: the usual battling rogues and monsters, the voiced stats. and scrambling up through the levels, lots of sword swinging and dagger stabbing and other magic pointings. The usual stuff of a LitRPG novel.
And that was the trouble.
It started off so well. Frequent gamer, Corbin, dreamed of getting the new, revolutionary game world, Chronicle, launched just six months before. Inside it, time was extended, with days of life in Chronicle taking only twelve hours of real time in the world. All that extra time to read, study, party, watch movies - whatever the user wanted. And after working, scrimping and saving, Corbin had finally been able to purchase his very own refurbished Chrompod.Sent
He logged in.
So much potential, for things to go wrong with a second hand machine, or in the world outside of the game, even interaction between the two with the passing time speed causing complications, conspiracies and dire plots, so much could happen. But there is almost nothing about the real world from which he is escaping, although the tiny glimpse given is intriguing (and, dare i say it? more interesting). It is, instead, just another slog-it-out gamer book. A good one, perhaps, but...
So, disappointment.
Perhaps the author has been using this first novel simply to set up the characters for something with more storyline later. I hope so. The characters are starting to develop, albeit not as particularly engaging for the most part, and the overall world system building is emerging. Time to take the reader beyond mere fantasy quests with mages and druids. Please.

Very cool listen
I really enjoyed the audio book. A new spin on magic and the way the system works.. I highly recommended the book. I hope the author is a fast writer...

My kingdom for a plot
Nick does his usual great work narrating so I won't waste time with that. It's probably the only thing that got me through this. That's a little harsh. The writing is decent, and character development is good. The problem is that there is NO plot. It's just a guy who is gifted a god dagger and goes around doing random stuff with other random characters. There is possibly a hint of an overall plot in the last 5 minutes of the book, but who can say for sure? If you have a free credit and like LitRPG, this isn't a bad listen nor terribly great.
P.S. GREAVES ARE NOT BOOTS! (Take a listen and you'll know what I mean)
