About this listen

The Serenity lands on the remote moon of Abel for a lucrative job but becomes embroiled in a young woman’s quest for vengeance and a starving frontier town’s fight for survival. Join Mal and the gang in this enthralling original tie-in novel from the award-winning series.

The Serenity crew head to Yell City, one of the settlements on Abel, a moon in the Rim. Their job: track down the killers of a local lawyer shot dead in the streets by a local gang. Their client is Annie Roberts, the eighteen-year-old daughter of the murdered man.

Lucky for them, Annie Roberts is more than capable of handling herself. Unlucky for them, the job is lot more complicated than they at first think it is. Annie’s father is not just the victim of local gang violence but also the target of some powerful men.

Taking down a local gang is one thing, but cleaning up a whole city? That’s not a job for the Serenity crew. But when their ship is impounded and Mal and the crew find themselves trapped in Yell City, they realize they are already in deeper than they could have ever imagined.

True Grit? More like True Annoying P erformance.

The dude redning was great as usual but the woman reading almost ruined the whole thing. Not a good direction to go in.

great story, annoying dual narration

Great story from Una McCormack, and a superb narrative from James Anderson Foster as usual, but… the mixed narration of the main characters is not working, and Emily Lawrence voice is plain annoying. She could’ve been fine for a few of the non recurring characters, but not for the Serenity crew.

If you like the universe give this a listen

Not the best addition to the recent novels in the Firefly universe but enjoyable all the same. A few deviations for the crew characters or leaning to heavily into their foibles. It’s always nice though to spend a bit of time in the universe and a new story. Performances split due to the way this one is written, but JAF nailing it as always.

disappointing

have enjoyed the whole series so far but this one was a big disappointment. I was interested in the multiple narrators but it just did not work. the execution from the new person was massively distracting and broke the immersion (too loud, thick accent) and took away from what little story there was.

hope the next one is a return to form but this felt like a waste

Not the best, but still worth a listen

I liked the story, and premise behind it, and I thought it was about time we got to the bottom of parts of the goings on behind the scenes, but it’s still weak in places.

I really like Emily Lawrence, but not so much in this one. Shame really.

Still worth a listen, but not as good as the others.

A thoroughly enjoyable audiobook

If you're a fan of firefly you'll love this. Plenty of action and humour to keep you wanting to listen to just one more chapter.

another fire fly outing

the story was good with lots of twist and turn in the plot. That keeps the listener on the edge of their seat,

Spot on Firefly adventure!

The voices really drew me in - both the speech patterns and the actual voices. Well done.

Decision to get a second narrator is a bad one

Story was ok, what you expect from the series, not the best but not the worst.

The new, second narrator is incredibly jarring. Not only has she come into a universe with a much loved narrator of several previous books, who all the fans are used to and love-the new one is literally narrating the same characters after JAF. It’s jarring and a poor decision.

I’m sorry but Emily Lawrence is not a very good narrator of these books. Fans of the books obviously enjoy the stylised western world with the language and the accents. But hers is like a really bad, over the top impression of someone in an old western saloon in a comedy sketch. The accent is very annoying.

I really hope they go back to the original format for the next book. I’m fully immersed in the universe at this point and this has put me off a bit. I really hope they’re not thinking of replacing JAF with Emily Lawrence, I’m not sure I could listen to another one.

A mixed bag

Another good story, the usually smooth narration spoiled by the female portions/character. The voice is a bit too jarring
