Bridget’s heart becomes torn between family loyalty and American tobacco tycoon Lyndon O’Neill III, the man she loves.
Meanwhile Phyllis Harvey has joined the WAAF, opting to serve overseas whilst trying to escape her past. Her letters home are upbeat and her friends are initially envious of descriptions of sunshine and blue sea. The truth she hides is that life on the island of Malta is fraught with extreme food shortages, daily air raids and the fear that tomorrow might never come.
The future appears far less certain as the reality of war bites into The Tobacco Girls’ lives.

What a shame
Another good book in the series but the narration was awful. She made Maisie and Carol sound like elderly women! I felt like giving up but I’m committed now so I finished it. I hope the next narrator is better.

Let down by the narrator
Good story, enjoyed the continuity of the girls, would say there was too much time spent going over what happened in books 1&2. Felt like we could have heard more about Phillis though.
BUT the narrator was horrendous, she made the women sound old and dumb although they are all young! Shame as it lets down the whole book.

Performance awful
The great story but the only reason I listened to the end was the knowledge that the next book would be read by the original narrator.
The ‘accents’ of Penelope Freeman were both patronising and embarrassing it’s spoilt the overall experience.

Still enjoying
I enjoyed the continuation of this series. Although the ending was really a cliffhanger.
I didn’t have a problem with the change of narrator for this book, compared to the rest of the series

I love the series
I have enjoyed all of the books in the series. I found i did not enjoy this narrator as much the previous books, but i did get used to her. Her accents were a bit coarser. this did not detract from the novel too much. I think the stories about war time sound pretty honest and real. Most enjoyable and very easy listen to.

Ruined by new narrator
If something isn’t broken, don’t fix it!
The first books were narrated so well. This new narrator makes the girls sound like old hags. Instead of just using an accent, she manages to age them 70 years.

Enjoyable story, terrible narration
Have listened to the first 4 books in this series. Really feel like I know the characters and enjoy hearing them develop and their own storylines.
Unfortunately this is my least favourite in the series. Too much going back over what has happened previously in the other books and this time narrator is terrible. Accents are awful and off putting. Girls sound like old ladies and the American and Australian accents are comedic.

Our History comes to life
brilliantly written, I've loved the trilogy. couldn't put it down. all characters come to life and portray life in Bristol in the 2nd World War. Superb. waiting for more.

Tobacco book3
Thoroughly enjoying this series . Accents are a bit funny but still it’s been great to follow the story of 3 Bristol girls during World War 2
