About this listen
A childhood memoir that recalls events from the life of a Cuban boy in 1950s Havana, Cuba, this book is a chilling account of trust and achievement, deceit and failure, and faith in the noble life lessons learned from his family. The author relates his tale through the filter of magical realism. He describes a young life lived among circumstances involving a wealthy family navigating life demands in mid-20th century Cuba, a country at civil war. At age 12, he was forced to emigrate to the United States the night power changed hands: January 1, 1959. The book is divided into two sections: Cuba (before 1/1/1959) and Exile (after 1/1/1959).
Major challenges induce him to turn into a superhero (Super-boy) who grows to become an adult (Superman) who overcomes some of his childhood weaknesses. The author, Dr. Orlando Garcia-Piedra, asks his family ghosts, Mom, Dad, his brother Humberto, and God, for help in writing his memoir. They accept and become his coauthors, leading most "conversations".
