Summary

Part psychological study, part self-help book, Finding Flow is a prescriptive guide that helps us reclaim ownership of our lives.

Based on a far-reaching study of thousands of individuals, Finding Flow contends that we often walk through our days unaware of and out of touch with our emotional lives. Our inattention makes us constantly bounce between two extremes: During much of the day, we live filled with the anxiety and pressures of our work and obligations, and during our leisure moments, we tend to live in passive boredom. The key, according to Csikszentmihalyi, is to challenge ourselves with tasks requiring a high degree of skill and commitment. Instead of watching television, play the piano. Transform a routine task by taking a different approach. In short, learn the joy of complete engagement. Though they appear simple, the lessons in Finding Flow are life altering.

Excellent advice and solid message in a timeless way. I recommend this as a good start to understanding life

Excellent

Well read, thought out and balanced. As an introduction to Flow or as a reminder, you will not find a better read/listen, but this is what you would expect from the founder of Flow.

A small points to note, this is now a fairly old book so some of the views are a bit well-aged and tired. That said, with an open mind this shouldn't be an issue to the avid listener.

A very interesting read

We were introduced to flow at uni, but this book was interesting every second, I have 6 other unfinished books in my library yet I couldn't stop listening to this on till I finished it, my first finished book on audible!

live a life of flow

flow is needed in all areas in life or entropy ensues disorder.

flow = order = contentment

entropy = disorder = discontent

This is one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing.

Excellent narration, excellent length, excellent way in which it is written. I recommend this over the other flow book by Mihalyi.

Interesting concept

Given this author's work is so heavily cited by other authors I had hoped for more aha moments

Outdated, clearly written in pre-smartphone era

My expectations of the father of Flow theory were clearly too high. It was a pleasant listening but without any "aha moments" or useful takeaways.

The book and the research it's based on are clearly outdated. Only TV is discussed when talking about teenagers consuming media. There I no mention of gaming, the Internet or social media interactions.

A classic on the subject

Well read. Definitive work on the subject. Flow is crucial for a good life. It is the quality of our doing stuff

How one's smaller picture first into the larger one

I liked the personalising of theories, the narrator's voice, the rhythm of the narrative similar to the flowers of the books concept
