About this listen
'These Benson and de Vere stories are unputdownable... A five star bravura performance. This writer gets better and better' A.N. Wilson
The Hither Green murder...
William Benson knows what it's like to be accused of something you didn't do - the fear, the vulnerability and the nightmare of watching your life unravel. Now he speaks on behalf of those who have no voice, defending anyone who claims to be innocent. This time, it's Karmen Naylor, estranged daughter of a south London crime boss, fighting a murder charge and desperate to be believed. But Benson becomes trapped into a grudge match between two rival clans, endangering himself and those he loves.
Tess de Vere is by Benson's side but she's keeping something from him. A stranger on the trail of a secret death squad operating in Northern Ireland during the Troubles brings a terrible secret into the heart of her own life. And he won't go away.
Can Tess and Will find their way through all the secrets and the lies? Should justice always be served - and if so, at what cost?
'The courtroom scenes are brilliant, and Benson really comes alive under pressure. Stubborn, fitful and contradictory, he's a highly individualised creation' Spectator
'Punchy dialogue and devious plotlines . . . compelling' The Times

Brilliant addition to the series
Excellent writing and narration. The s of the series was wrapped up in book 3 but the characters and writing are interesting and so well done that it is easy to see this becoming an extensive series of books. Highly recommend.

Excellent, entertaining listen.
Well written and wonderfully narrated. I'm really enjoying this series. I thought it was getting a bit formulaic at one point but so glad I stuck with it. Twists and turns aplenty,

The long awaited Book 4
I adored this book. Full of twists and turns and I had been eagerly awaiting the latest Benson and De Vere saga. Brilliant writing, really credible characters and there is clearly a book 5 to come. The courtroom scenes were riveting and the narration was top class as always. Highly recommend this.

A great story with an awkwardly written ending
The convoluted dragged out ending. Otherwise a great story. Very well narrated . I will look out for mare books in the series.

Great book
This is as others have suggested the best book yet by this author. Also nice that Tess gets to be the brilliant one in the end!

Another Benson & DeVere winner!
The series is fresh and maintain great story lines. This addition is no exception. It has enough twists and undercurrents to make it a page turner. Great narration as always which brings the books alive.
Well done.

Great series
I just love the stories which are all meticulously plotted. And the narrator is brilliant, with a well modulated delivery and no silly accents.

Too many secrets, too many lies!
It's been two years since solicitor Tess De Vere instructed 'lifer' barrister William Benson. Despite the attraction between them, that her & her friend Sally's investigation (& a death bed confession) revealed that he was indeed not guilty of the murder he'd served time for, she's stayed away, because now she's the one with something to hide, secrets in her past!
Like another reviewer, I wonder if only the engaging trilogy, Summary Justice, Blind Defence & Forced Confessions were originally planned by the author, and Fatal Proof was an after thought, that's set to become another trilogy, this time with the backstory being around Tess's angst, the disclosure of events that happened during the Troubles in Northern Ireland!!!
As to the criminal case, the Hither Green murder, that brings the Benson / De Vere team together again, it's rooted in gangland, sibling jealously. Benson does his magic in court, getting the underserving defendant off, but it's Tess who eventually puts all the pieces together to see what's been behind the maneuverings. The proceedings at the Old Bailey are as ever enthralling, however to say the the plot is convoluted is an understatement.
Overall, it's an enjoyable enough listen, with Daniel Weyman's fine narration capturing the tense, emotional, lovey-dovey moments nicely; just wish I'd taken a break from from the series after finishing book 3.
