Summary

Vienna, 1903. In St Florian's military school, a young cadet is found dead - his body lacerated with razor wounds.

Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt calls on his friend Doctor Max Liebermann to help with the investigation. In the closed society of the school, power is everything. Suspicion falls on an elite group of cadets, with a penchant for sadism and dangerous games.

But when it is discovered that the dead boy was a frequent guest of the deputy headmaster's attractive young wife, other motives for murder suggest themselves.

Fatal Lies

Classic detective story, well researched. Really captures the atmosphere of Vienna and the early days of Psychoanalysis. I'll certainly listen to the other books in the series. Gordon Griffins's reading is superb as usual!.

Another Great Story but annoying narration

What did you like most about Fatal Lies?

Great plot and atmosphere as usual with this series. An authentic (as far as I can tell from knowing modern Vienna) sense of place and time. A good plot with a few twists and turns, but not overly contrived.

What other book might you compare Fatal Lies to, and why?

Like previous Frank Tallis stories and maintaining the standard of the series and characters.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I found the way the narrator went up at the end of his sentences like a journalist reporting on the telly very annoying and not the way to read a book. Previous narrator was much better. I think I will persevere with the series despite this irritation.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The repentance of one of the leading characters was skilfully handled and realistic.

Any additional comments?

If you write any more books, please find a more suitable narrator for the audio editions.
