About this listen
Unearth the literary classics of one of America’s most famous authors.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was a masterful writer, with his stories effortlessly touching people’s hearts and reflecting powerful themes and ideas that ring true to this day. A symbol of the rich and vibrant “jazz era”, his books have only grown more popular with time, being adapted into countless films and plays.
Now, this collection reveals Fitzgerald’s work in all its glory, unveiling three literary legends that form the foundation of this incredible author’s popularity. At times romantic, at others bizarre, each story is imbued with a poignant reflection on society and a unique look into his own personal life and relationships in the early 20th century.
Inside this collection, you’ll find:
- The Beautiful and Damned, a gripping and detailed look at the convoluted, materialistic, and twisted world of the 1920 socialite elites
- This Side of Paradise, the classic novel which explores love, passion, and greed
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a unique and bizarre tale about a boy who discovers that he’s growing backward

"The Jazz years."
It has been several decades since I last read F.Scott Fitzgerald, and this collection includes three of his books, the early duo which helped create his reputation, The Beautiful and the Canned (starting on the Audible chapter 2), This Side of Paradise ( chapter 13) and the novella, The Mysterious Case of Benjamin Button (chapter 25) which I had not previously read. It is, of course, essential to remember that times, with opinions and some language, have changed radically in the decades since these books were written, some voiced expressions or attitudes considered amusing then now feel untenable especially as regards women ('Remarkable that a person can comprehend so little yet live in such a complex civilisation') and, of course, the word 'gay' is used in it's earlier sense. Although still dazzling in it's representation of an age and society, I admit that I personally found the first book, The Beautiful and the Damned, quite irritating, seemingly going nowhere, with little character vignette taking up a substantial part of the work. Conversely, I revealed in the writing of it's companion, This Side of Paradise.
Narrator Rory Young has an attractive voice and reads well with good expression and was pleasure to hear, except he did not give distinct separate voice to the characters which further impeded enjoyment of The Beautiful and the Damned, in which a lot of conversation takes place, especially in earlier chapters. Nevertheless, overall, his performance was good.
My thanks to the rights holder of The F.Scott Fitzgerald Collection, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. A great author who brings vibrant, visual writing to his readers
