About this listen

Philip Roth is the most decorated American writer of his generation. In Exit Ghost, this master author crafts what may be the final chapter in the story of his beloved hero Nathan Zuckerman. After 11 years of isolation in his New England mountain refuge, Zuckerman returns to New York City and makes three important connections that threaten his carefully protected sense of isolation.©2007 Philip Roth (P)2007 Recorded Books, LLC Fiction Jewish Literary Fiction

Vintage Roth

In this book Roth deals with the trials and tribulations of ageing and illness. Zuckerman, the main character, is torn between the rational course of action and the self destructive desire for a young woman. The futility of this relationship is emphasized by the fact that it can never be consummated due to his impotence. Roth gives us great insights into ageing, sickness and the turmoil caused when the the mind and self are still full of overwhelming, infatuous desire but are trapped in a sick, decaying body.
But you don't have to be old or sick to identify with the sentiments here...Roth just mirrors and magnifies our typical human weaknesses. Anyone who has suffered the pain of an irrational, all consuming desire will understand this too well. It's a powerfully written book with convincing narration - strongly recommended.
