Un escritor, estudioso de la literatura del siglo XVIII, aparece muerto en su despacho. Es la empleada de la limpieza quien descubre el cadáver. El inspector Néstor Páramo se hace cargo del caso y acude al lugar de los hechos. Tras examinar la escena del crimen, porque crimen es, concluye, de conformidad con el equipo forense que lleva trabajando una hora, que todo apunta a un suicidio, aunque ello no es óbice, por supuesto, para que el proceso de investigación continúe como es de rigor.

A través del inspector, vamos a descubrir las características más visibles de los dos personajes principales. En efecto, un primer vistazo al cadáver muestra una marcada deformidad física. Era un tullido. Seguidamente le presentan a una joven dotada de una extraordinaria belleza. Para su gran sorpresa, descubre que se trata de la mujer de la limpieza, de origen ruso, aunque lleva mucho tiempo viviendo en España.
