Critic reviews

Eruption is extraordinary. It's the return of the big summer blockbuster but it is also something more – the first summer blockbuster masterpiece. Michael Crichton and James Patterson have come together to create a novel that is as thrilling and jaw-dropping as Jurassic Park. Every page of this novel features the best gifts of two writing giants. Full of suspense, frighteningly real and absolutely unforgettable (Don Winslow)
Flat-out incredible. Buckle up. This is heart-pounding storytelling at its finest. I dare you to try and put this amazing book down. It's Crichton-smart, Patterson-paced, incredibly cinematic and it just feels like a giant summer movie. Two of the bestselling storytellers of all time have come together to deliver a hugely entertaining techno-thriller adventure story (T.J. Newman)
Eruption features Michael Crichton's stunning knowledge of science, scientific speculation and edge-of-your-seat storytelling and Patterson's remarkable gifts for suspense and relentless pacing. The once-in-a-lifetime combination of Michael Crichton and James Patterson results is one of the most entertaining novels I've read in years. You will be absolutely riveted as you turn every page (Adrian McKinty)

Not bad James Patterson, not bad

A good thought-provoking thriller which fizzles away a bit towards the end. As some others have said, I would not be surprised if there is a film in the offing.

I expected better from these two!

If you want a 'ripping yarn' for holiday reading, and don't expect too much, this will probably do for you but when I say holiday READING......that's exactly what I mean because the narrator is so awful I found it difficult to listen. Surely two authors of experience and fame could afford to have their books read by someone better? Buy the kindle version or a paperback and enjoy loads of people getting killed by a volcano whilst the hero saves the world from something far more deadly.

Decent enough but not his best.

I have listened to some bad narration but this really takes the biscuit. Absolutely appalling.

Who ok'd this read?

I'm a big fan of Crichton and think Patterson is OK. This is a very week entry in either writers cannon but as an easy listen it would have been OK were it not for the worst reading talent I've ever listened to from a "professionally" read book. Even machine read books are not this bad. There are pauses mid sentence and inflection changes. It's almost as if the reader read part of each sentence on a different day then they just stitched them all together. I almost stopped and returned the book for a refund but I did want to know how it ended! Be warned!

Not crichtons best

It’s a bit alpha male saves the day from a utterly preposterous threat due to ridiculous decisions- I won’t give the plot away but frankly no one puts dangerous stuff on a volcano

Slow burn, poor reader

Really struggled to get into the story, mainly because the reader struggled with many of the words. In the first half of the book, there were many scientific and technical vocabulary which the reader struggled to pronounce, as well as his random pauses or emphasis on random words.
After the half way point, the story picked up but I would recommend just borrowing the book from your library.

God awful narration

So hard to properly review this book given how bad the narrator is. I can’t believe it was approved for release it’s that bad. He pauses in bizarre places as if he’s unsure what he’s reading. I’d suggest buying the book rather than listening.

I made it to chapter 8.

I don’t know if it’s Patterson taking over from Crichton, or Clarke Peters’ narration, but I found this very hard going, even though I only got a few chapters in.

Peters sounds like he’s either reading the book for the first time, or is reading through bifocals, with pauses and changes in the rhythm of the narration seeming to indicate getting to the end of a new page and adjusting focal distance to the top of the next.

Audible, please put some time in on getting the original Crichton books recorded/uploaded such as Airframe, and possibly get a producer to sit in on the recording sessions.

Edit: I’ve just heard the beginning of the Audible.com version of this, read by Scott Brick. It’s probably a rights issue, but why isn’t that version just used over here in the UK? Maybe the same reason Brick’s recording of The Lost World isn’t available here.

Cheesier than a Fondue

Poor storyline, dreadful storytelling. Struggled to finish which was a shame as I love Michael Crichton and was looking forward to its release. Narrator was simply awful.
