About this listen

My legacy is to hate him, but I can’t.

Life was normal. Until a woman appears and tells me I’m an elf and she’s my grandmother. Not quite what I expected after another day at the office.

Soon, I’m thrown into a world of duty, magic, and monsters.

And a family feud as old as time itself.

I would have run. I would have gone back to my old life. Or started a new one.

But when the man I’m supposed to hate turns out to be my elven soulmate, the only thing I can do is fight for my right to love him.
No matter what kind of monster gets in the way.

Elven Duty is a gay urban fantasy romance with two star-crossed lovers, a ton of monsters hellbent on destroying this dimension and a secret “baby”. This book has a Happy For Now ending with a tease of the next book in the series.

This book was previously part of the Magic Emporium multi-author series. The only changes made are the fixing of awry typos and the addition of the last chapter tease.

Fun world and colorful characters

Story: I really like the world Rhys Everly created in this series! There's a lot going on, but the narration style and construction of the story gives all the info the reader needs to follow the plot and understand the realm. It's a very engaging and dynamic stoy with really fun characters. Can't wait to see more of the guys' adventures!
Narration: Great performance from John York. Easy to follow with lots of voices that fit the characters well.

A Whole New And Strange World.

MM, Urban Fantasy, Romance. A Compelling and intriguing story from the start, a great story that has twists and turns throughout. Lots of action and adventure and so so much drama while also being sweet and funny whilst at times bringing tears to my eyes. Absolutely loved it all, their story continues in the next book. Fantastic narration by John York.

A fascinating series opener

Both the author and the narrator were new to me, but I will keep both in mind.
Rhys Lawless has created a wonderful world and populated it with very interesting characters.
Jude grew up without his family. When he is found by his grandmother, he of course visits her and has his hottest date in that very town. Stupidly, he meets Roman again quite quickly and under circumstances that Jude can't explain at first.
I found Jude delightful. He just doesn't care what others say about him. Roman, on the other hand, has been told all his life what to do, but his gut tells him that it can't be right.

I thought the writing style was wonderful and the more I listened to of the story, the more it captivated me. It's about elves, about monsters, and about feuding families who can't act with or without the other family. There are interesting fights, hot scenes and then there is Royal who stole my heart.
I was captivated by the story and am eager to see what happens next.

John York did a great job. He has a pleasant voice that is easy to listen to and he breathes life into the characters with his different voices. I could picture the innocent Royal right away. John York was fun to listen to and he made the story very entertaining.

A captivating love story!

This book starts one of the most interesting series ever written. Roman and Jude's story is about soulmates fighting to be together in spite magic, family, duty, monsters and even themselves. The plot is twisted and intense and got me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Mr. York made a beautiful narration, bringing alive all the amazing characters and the turns and twists in their personalities, feelings, emotions and insecurities, capturing all the captivating storyline with his voice and acting skills. The wonderful start of a captivating series, greatly narrated!

Great start to a series.

Rhys Lawless definitely creates worlds that draw you into the series - and this one did exactly that. The story and the characters are both really engaging, and the world building was great. I loved listening to Jude and Roman’s story and the background with their families feuding. I’ve not listened to much of John York’s narration - but it was spot on with this and I’ll definitely look out for more.

Entertaining fantasy romance

I am really enjoying this multi-author series. Such a great range of characters and plots involved and Rhys Lawless gives us a forbidden romance with elves and monsters.
Jude is found by his grandmother and brought into a world that he never knew existed. He has always been different but now he knows why he is faster, stronger and more agile. His one night of fun with a stranger in town turns out to be the best and maybe worst thing as Roman is a Meyer who are enemies of the Cohen's. However a pair is made up of one from each family as their magics must work together to defeat the monsters who enter this world.
What unfolds is a wonderfully told tale of hot romance, action filled fight scenes, feuding families and elven magic that Jude needs to learn a lifetimes worth. The drama that occurs between the members of the families is both entertaining and sad as they work to keep two men, who are clearly meant to be together, apart. Jude is a master at not caring what he says to people, I was often laughing out loud at some of his comments both said in jest or anger. Roman is the one who struggles the most with their relationship as he's lived this life always being told never to trust a Cohen and whilst he constantly disagrees with what they say, they are still his family. It does come to the point though when someone has to choose - Love or family feud.
I have to say though, for me the show was stolen by one person named Royal. He's possibly my new favourite being. So freaking adorable!
This is definitely a recommended read and I love the tease at the end from the author! A great start to this new series.
John York gives an entertaining performance, bringing the fantasy story to life and real personality to the characters, especially Jude's snark and Royal's innocence.

An Ok-ish first book

I liked it well enough but I didn't really connect with the characters. I found the sex scenes weren't that good nor steamy either.
In short, It was kinda average.
I wouldn't mind reading the sequel but if I don't, it won't be a lost.
