L’autore immagina che la Follia sia una dea, che in un discorso pubblico mostra di quanti e quali benefici l’intera umanità goda grazie a lei e come, senza la sua opera, la vita risulterebbe spiacevole se non addirittura insopportabile. In quello che lo stesso Erasmo definisce come uno “scherzo letterario” con uno stile ferocemente satirico vengono passate in rassegna varie categorie di personaggi, non risparmiando né re né papi. Erasmo condanna non i seguaci della Follia, ma i veri pazzi, che, nella loro presunzione di essere infallibilmente nel vero, infliggono sofferenze e dolori all'umanità, causano guerre, tormentano l’intero genere umano.
