Summary
Superstition and murder haunt nineteenth-century Scotland in a twisting mystery by the prize-winning author of Edinburgh Twilight and Edinburgh Dusk.
Spiritualism has captured the public’s imagination. Séances are all the rage, and Detective Ian Hamilton’s otherwise sensible aunt Lillian is not immune to their allure. But for Ian, indulging her superstitions has its limits. When members of Lillian’s circle of séance friends begin turning up dead, Ian doesn’t need a medium to tell him these aren’t freak accidents.
With the help of his friend Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian investigates, and he is soon drawn into a dark world of believers and tricksters, and a puzzling series of murders with no pattern, no motive, and no end in sight. Most alarming, the crimes conjure up the ghosts of Ian’s own past, including the mysterious deaths of his parents, which have haunted him for years.
As two cases converge, science collides with the uncanny, and Ian must confront truths that are more disturbing than he could ever have imagined.

In another world
I have read all three of these Edinburgh books I can’t wait for the next.
I have been totally transferred to the dark and sinister world of Victorian Edinburgh.
The characters are so believable. Loved it from the first work.

Enjoyable 3rd part of trilogy
Characters seem lifelike as you either feel empathy or revulsion. As with the previous books the story keeps your interest from beginning to end. Glad to think the ending may leave an opportunity for another chapter in the Edinburgh saga.

Could do with a British editor
Good fun stories nicely read but there were one or two language discrepancies; sidewalk, leash, trash etc which just feel wrong, and I think it more likely that Victorian Edinburgh would be infested with woodworm rather than termites.

An excellent story, very well read
I love this series, and look forward to more .... the story itself is captivating, and well told, and the reader has excellent skills in narrating that make the story enjoyable, not melodramatic, and has much skill in achieving the different accents.

Littered with Americanisms
I enjoy these books but the stray American terms stuck out as lazy, especially when the author went over the top to show us she had discovered Scottish slang! If that hadn’t been so annoying, I’d have given it 4 stars and a glowing review.
