About this listen

Baking is an alchemical process for Corinna Chapman. At four am she starts work at Earthly Delights, her bakery in Calico Alley.

But one morning Corinna receives a threatening note saying 'The wages of sin is death' and finds a syringe in her cat's paw. A blue-faced junkie has collapsed in the dark alley and a mysterious man with beautiful eyes appears with a plan for Corinna and her bread. Then it is Goths, dead drug addicts, witchcraft, a homeless boy and a missing girl and it seems she will never get those muffins cooked in time.

With flair, chutzpah and a talent for kneading, Corinna Chapman will find out who exactly is threatening her life and bake some beautiful bread.

Another fab book from KG

I fell in love with Kerry Greenwood's style and sense of humour through Miss Fisher, and I am equally delighted to find a fat baker like me as the heroine (haha) of a new series. I can't wait to read the rest!

Entertaining mystery story, engaging characters

Where does Earthly Delights rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Pretty high on the easy listening side

What did you like best about this story?

Well-researched background, which on the whole was well-blended in to the story

What about Louise Siversen’s performance did you like?

Enjoyed her dry and wry delivery, and her engaging variety of tones and voices

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Only really curious to see how it panned out. It had a HFN feel from the start, and I wasn't disappointed

Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed this. The mysteries weren't the most challenging, and the writer gave us a few clues along the way. Good cast of characters and a well-drawn main character. A bit of an insight into the underbelly of probably most large cities in the developed world. If you're looking for a light, easy listen which will hold your attention, this might be one for you.

A good story but the performance was a bit poor!

Although the story is fairly good the reader was average with some fairly unconvincing "voices" for different characters which were essentially the same.

Fun, frolicking and feisty

What an absolute delight, the characters are wonderfully quirky, there are little gems throughout and I can’t wait to get on to the next in the series.

Good fun from Aussieland

I loved this book it is great fun and had me laughing out loud at times. It is refreshing to have a book set in Australia instead of GB or USA so I looking forward to reading some more. Kerry Greenwood has read a lot of the same writers that I have so the references have been understood and enjoyed.

The narrator is just right, an Australian Barbara Rosenblat, I will now look out for books read by her. A good fun read.

Love this book.

I really loved this book, it's funny, quirky and has fantastic characters. I really liked the fact that Corinna, the main character, isn't stunning and perfect. She's just a real, normal woman who knows her flaws and accepts them and herself. The list of characters in the tale are great. Each one is as interesting and loveable as the last, and you real find yourself getting drawn into their world. The main mystery wasn't difficult to work out, but I don't really think it was meant to be and it was interesting to follow Corinna and the others as they worked it all out.
I also have to say that Louise Siversen narration really makes this book. The story's great, but her narration really brings the whole thing to life. She has a really pleasant voice to listen to and the way she voices that characters is brilliant. She also puts a lot of emotion into the narration instead of just reading it. I will definitely look for more books narrated by her.

Very different from Phryne!

Would you consider the audio edition of Earthly Delights to be better than the print version?

I do not know as I have not purchased the print version - yet

What other book might you compare Earthly Delights to, and why?

None to my knowledge. It was so unusual in the way it was put together but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

This is the one bugbear. the narrator did a fair job on the female voices but failed lamentably on the male voices. (in my view only)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Perhaps an additional narrator to help with the male voices?

Narrator is bad.

I love this series o books but the narrator is dreadful. Her male voices are awful. Was going to buy the whole series in audible but could not listen to her after a few chapters. Very very disappointing

Terrible compared with the Phryne Fisher

If you are only contemplating this because you enjoyed the Phryne Fisher Mysteries step away now.
This lacks all the clever turn of phrase and slick writing that made them enjoyable. One chapter in and I feel like I've been lectured at twice. No subtlety like Fisher books just clunky dull moaning. Phryne felt like an escape this feels like chore.
