About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
From internationally bestselling author John Boyne, an inescapably gritty story about one young man whose direction in life takes a vastly different turn than what he expected.
It’s the tabloid sensation of the year: two well-known footballers standing in the dock, charged with sexual assault, a series of vile text messages pointing towards their guilt.
As the trial unfolds, Evan Keogh reflects on the events that have led him to this moment. Since leaving his island home, his life has been a lie on many levels. He’s a talented footballer who wanted to be an artist. A gay man in a sport that rejects diversity. A defendant whose knowledge of what took place on that fateful night threatens more than just his freedom or career.
The jury will deliver a verdict but, before they do, Evan must judge for himself whether the man he has become is the man he wanted to be.

Wonderfully written & performed story by one of irelands finest authors.
Topical subject & one which is well told. Some oddities in the storyline of the book but altogether a good read/listen which delves deep into the main character.

Another cracking John Boyne
Powerful & pacy, a cracking listen. No one tells a good story like John Boyne - I loved how this followed on from Water. Very well done.

How extraordinarily well written
Too many emotions to write about, but sadness for a life ruined by unkindness to start, and cruelty … this one will be hard to forget

incredibly relevant and moving
I found this story incredibly relevant in today's culture of fame worship , footballers being representative of this culture particularly for young men and boys. shining a light on the grubby underbelly of what is represented as glossy and aspirational for so many. the portrayal of sexual assault in this culture is terrifying and all too common from what is in the media on an all most daily basis. I hope many young people read this book and see it very much as a cautionary tale . incredibly well written and pack's an emotional punch at the end . Well done John Boyne . narration also excellent.
