About this listen

Gabriel was a successful magic student until a classmate framed him, forcing him to join the Adventurer’s Guild to survive.

Unfortunately, his career as an adventurer doesn’t turn out quite how he was hoping. While on his first delve, he discovers more about monsters, dungeons, and souls than he ever imagined. With that knowledge comes power and new friends. But even as his exotic companions enrich his life, they also give him more to lose.

When Gabriel learns that time isn’t on their side, he has to find his way as a Dungeon Master before greedy adventurers and ravenous monsters strip away everything he holds dear.

story is great

Loved listening to it. It is a dungeon core story, the harem side of it is almost a side thing. Really enjoyed the story.

Entertaining, funny and erotic

Highly enjoyable, light hearted (not for younger listeners) and erotic without being gratuitous or juvenile

Don’t let the cover fool you

This book is brutal at times and i loved it.

The MC is likeable and isn’t a wannabe alpha, he’s trying to step into his role as a newly formed DM.

The main female cast. A loveable horny hellbound is too adorable and a gorgan with understandable baggage of her past tho not explored enough.

A brilliant, evocative adventure!

First of all, it is essential to not go into this book expecting it to be a rampant sex-fest. This is not an indignation of such media, but rather simply a note.

While there are many points that feature adult content throughout the book, the focus is for the most part held on the Characters and the Story. This is greatly to the book's benefit, Bastion Knight presents us with a series of engaging characters and situations - all the while using them to spin a narrative that is delivered in both an interesting and deep fashion.

The Dungeon Mechanics and Magecraft Systems are well explained - given to us step by step as relevant to the situation and without ever feeling forced or as if solving it's own problems. Pacing wise, the book delivers - with the goals and progress towards said goals always feeling apparent.

As this book does feature sexual content, it would be wrong to avoid discussing it. While not all included content specifically falls to my liking, i can gladly say that even such content is delivered in such a way that it never bogs the content down in over-exploration nor does it go by so fast that it wasn't worth mentioning.

The interactions between the major charcaters during more casual situations is, in a word, pleasant; it feels comfortable to sit with these characters as they go through their events. During times of combat, the tension in the atmosphere is rich and engaging. It was difficult to remain calm as i listened to this book at a train station, hearing the detailing of events. This is with the one exception of the initial combat, however this serves as an initiation to details that become increasingly relevant, and as such i can forgive it readily.

At multiple points i found myself genuinely laughing out loud - and at many others i was in deep compersion for the character's enjoyment. Emotion is really the biggest selling point; this story has many, many emotions - and Bastion does well not to steer away from expressing them readily.

As for Andrea Parsneau's voicework? Outstanding. She is a wonderful fit for the cast, and injects so much life into all the characters.

i extend my deepest thank yous to both Bastion and Andrea for providing me with my new favourite book series - and i deeply recommend this book.

an interesting first entry - concept + characters

andrea delivers a first rate performance here, bringing each character to life and giving the world some fantastic emotion.

the setting concept is fantastic and has a few homages to Dungeon Keeper (of course!) and sets the stage for further adventures.

that is also a bit of a flaw as well - the story spends a lot of time on build up and info dumping. the main character spends an awful lot of time navel gazing about the situation and it brings to mind the scenes in anime where a character narrates and describes what the audience has just seen. theres a lot of TELLING that goes on and it begins to feel like padding. luckily the story moves ahead before it becomes too repetitive. the world is interesting and has some fantastic potential.

also the characters, while amazing, had strangely disparate power levels when drama called for it. the hell hound felt like she should have been able to lawnmower base rate humans yet she struggled. the gorgon who was supposed to be able to turn whole adventuring parties to stone single handed, struggled against what were essentially hired mercs and town guards? the fight was great but itd have been good if they pasted the base guards easily and then the invaders played a trump card with some adventurers to ramp up the challenge.

theres a lot of plot hooks here setting up for the sequel. i will be listening to that! just hope the pacing is upped and we get a little more in the way of advancement and the main character thinking ahead. the romance was fantastic and showed a wonderful development and layer of growth. i look forward to more of that.
