A Must Read

An incredibly sexy, thrilling and intriguing sequel to another exciting series from a great author. Full of blisteringly hot sex scenes, some incredible super powered action and some tense moments round out this exceptional book. A must read.

Alex Ford does an excellent job yet agin.

Edging in book form

I was left a bit unsure by book 1.- the premise is fun, the world is interesting, but the character is really frustrating and the setups for the spice feels like perpetual edging, with a payoff that feels lacking.

the main problem seems to be how Wills power is either amazing at dicing anything then seems to struggle in combat. I fail to see the scary guy from prison as he struggles in every fight he's in. add to that that his enemies limp away at a key point in the story, it feels like padding out the threat and we don't see the ruthless side.

Will also comes across as a really creepy, sanctimonious horn dog at times. He gets all angry about Rues streaming yet gets handsy and acts like a teenager. he doesn't plan, he doesn't follow through and then gets naval gazingly annoying. I want to love this story as the premise and the setup are awesome but the slow burn feels like it's taking too long and every time we get close it feels like the anime protagonist both wanting something but also going on a monologue about how wrong things are, how awful it would be. some of it is the girls being flighty or flirty. but the core is the "poor communication kills" trope that is on display here. Will constantly tries to internalise and be the mopey anti hero and it grates after a while. and Relic is overbearing and hypocritical, forcing family into dangerous lifestyles then lecturing will and trying to run his life.

again, I want to like this. I should and for the most part it WORKS. It excels during the action moments, when it use s those scenes to amplify the risk and the relationships. the slice of life stuff feels weirdly paced and slapstick at times compared to it. we need will to get off the fence and either cut loose or to be honest. relic as a character is true to herself but is difficult to sympathise with. Rue is the most balanced and likeable of them all and I wish she would take more spotlight.

the narration is amazing, the story just needs to be paced a little better and have less repetition and naval gazing.
