About this listen
It feels like paradise, but deadly secrets lie beneath the waves off the coast of Kauai.
Sometimes, Kaia Oana thinks her dolphins are more humane than humans. As a mammal intelligence researcher, Kaia has learned a thing or two about the goodness and intelligence of dolphins - and as a natural scientist in close proximity to weapons developers, she's learned a thing or two about humans as well.
When a tourist catamaran explodes off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, Kaia and her trained dolphin, Nani, rush to aid the search and rescue effort. After hours of searching, an exhausted Kaia is pulled from the water by Lieutenant Commander Jesse Matthews of the US Navy.
Lieutenant Matthews is accustomed to following protocol - and a civilian-dolphin rescue is not typical operating procedure. But when his colleagues ignore the possibility that missile research had something to do with the sunken catamaran, Jesse recruits Kaia and her dolphin to help him conduct his own investigation. The olive-skinned mermaid had impressed him - in more ways than one.
As their rogue investigation takes them into the waters surrounding the sunken boat - and their personal chemistry takes them into other uncharted territory - Kaia and Jesse discover that they have become targets themselves. Someone doesn't want them snooping around that wreckage...someone desperate enough to kill.

Wonderful setting, mystery and romance with a foundation of family and faith.
I struggled to get into it at first since the first chapters jump around a bit and there are many characters introduced. But a few chapters in it really gripped me.
It is an absolute masterpiece!
I loved the setting of the island, which was expertly set with spread out descriptions and details.(not just a full stack of knowledge at the beginning like some books)
The characters were interesting;I couldn't quite figure Kaya out at first but they all grew on me. They were relatable and carried their secrets well.
The romance was great in my opinion. It felt natural and had actual chemistry.(The church scene was so cute!) It is a clean romance with almost no spice except a little towards the end, but it is so well done as it doesn't depend on spice to create the romance.
The mystery was perfect for my taste, not too intense but not too light. It was suspenseful and kept me guessing as to who the antagonist was. I do feel that their motive was not very well grounded or expounded on.
The theme of family is woven throughout the story without being too strong or cringy, and I love how complex and real each member was(even though I kept getting the brothers mixed up).
It is not too heavy on the spirituality of the characters but their faith is again woven through it all and makes them who they are and helps them through their individual struggles.
The narration was good, if a bit monotone and I would've liked more distinction between characters' voices.
Overall an Amazing book. 10/10 would recommend. Thank you Audible and Colleen Coble for this heartwarming read. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
