About this listen

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost. But not all survivors were human. In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators. And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising... and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city's Regent, her destiny is changed forever. Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira's patron changes more than just Lucian's perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted - a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers. Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

Looking forward to hearing more!

To start off this review I would like to address why I have rated the performance at a 3 star. I love Meghan's voice, and any time she was doing character voices, I was fully wrapped in the story. However, when speaking from the point of view of the narrator, the tone was fairly bland and sounded uninterested.

This aside, I really loved this book. A great story taking place in a great world. Love that we get the perspective of the 'monster' for once. A likable main character with understandable motivations and desires. Really looking forward to more.

Dark and Gritty with Human masters & Vamp slaves

What made the experience of listening to Dissension the most enjoyable?

This isn't your typical dystopian book, and its great to see a different take on this genre. We usually get stories about surviving in times of post apocalyptic hardship in an end of the world scenario. Here however the world has been rebuilt. Instead of vampires and humans getting along together we have humans who have made the vampires their slaves. Brilliant. Humans are still the ultimate predators. A great premise and a good store with all of the characters, no matter how minor, well thought out and described.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mira's character is a strong kick ass Woman/vampire who stands her ground no matter what punishment she may have to endure. I liked the strength and determination of the character.

What about Meghan Kelly’s performance did you like?

I really enjoyed the narration which brought the characters and this world to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

To be honest I really enjoyed the book in its entirety. It's a vampire story with a different take on the vampire/human world. Vampires are not the predators or dominant/superior for once as in this story they have become the prey. Humans are dominant and as always we are capable of good, evil, interest and we can be better or worse than we are raised to be.

Great

Fast-paced dystopian fantasy from the oppressed vampires' pov.
Original and believable concept with how cruel humanity can be, this had me hooked from the beginning.
Nice to get away from the usual vampire romance with bad ass violence in arena style combat and a strong female main character who has just enough snark to keep it interesting.
only downside was it ended too soon.
Haven't read any of K.A. Salidas books before but will be adding the author to my list.
a must-read/listen!

Absolutely Fantastic!

I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed listening to Dissension and fell in love with the lead character Mira as she is still feisty, her own person and has a wicked sense of humour, even though she has been in captivity as a gladiator for decades. Mira was really brought to life by the narrator, she did a superb job with the other characters and a fantastic finish with the story as a whole. The story was thrilling, filled with action and deception throughout and I cannot wait to find out what happens in book two.

A Solid Beginning to this new series

I like how this story sets out a different type of human and vampire interaction in a post-apocalyptic setting.
The usual settings have become quite drab and although this is fairly short the series has quite a lot of legs in it.
The determination and grit shown by the main vampire character helps this along immediately and i like the narration provided as it does suit ( although it does sound very like a certain tv mom) the story. I feel quite a lot of promise for this series although perhaps a little more depth in the initial chapters actions and perhaps more in the gladiatorial arena would have been good. This is not to say that Salidas doesn't make this a believable world and true to their characters personalities just some small bits missing i feel for me means this maybe falls short of the 4.5 star mark.
I requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts on this for everyone.

Great book

I absolutely loved this book, mainly because I enjoy a story with a strong female protagonist and to feature vampires in a dystopian future and as the suppressed party is a nice twist to this kind of fiction.
In the aftermath of the end of the World the survivors, humans and vampires have to work together, but soon humans use the one weakness (light) to enslave the vampire population and force them to fight as gladiators.
Mira a champion vampire gladiator relies on her strength and skill to survive while constantly seeking a way to escape. Her sardonic wit and hatred for her enslavers often do her more harm than good.
An escape attempt leads her to cross paths with Lucian Stavros, the pampered Regent, who is curious about her and her race. He becomes her patron and they slowly begin to develop an understanding of each other and finally have to rely on each other for survival.

An inspired interweaving of the supernatural with the futuristic.

The narrator was perfect for this story, fluid and well paced reading with clear and concise diction.

Vampires.

Right from the beginning it shows that the author K. A. Salidas loves the idea of vampires and who knows they might exist among us, also there might be many more planets where humans or aliens which are bred as cattle and when the planet can’t sustain its harvest time which at earth we are pretty much there.

First book of the series and as short as it is the story is written beautifully.

Meghan Kelly narrates the characters perfectly.

Recommended !!!

Oded Ostfeld.
