 Raabes Erzählung "Die Schwarze Galeere" greift eine Episode aus der Geschichte des Befreiungskampfes der Niederländer auf, die Carl Curth in seiner historischen Darstellung "Der niederländische Revolutionskrieg" (1823) überliefert hat: den bravourösen Handstreich der "Schwarzen Galeere" im Hafen von Antwerpen. Dieses Schiff, ein Kaperschiff der niederländischen Freiheitskämpfer, der "Wassergeusen", greift bei Nacht und Nebel in blitzartigen Überfällen spanische Schiffe an, vernichtet sie und verschwindet wie ein Geisterschiff wieder in den Weiten des Meeres. Mit der Liebe zwischen Jan und Myga vertieft Raabe das historische Geschehen um eine Dimension konkreter Menschlichkeit, ohne je ins vordergründig Private abzugleiten.
