Sieglinde lebt unglücklich an der Seite ihres Mannes Hunding. In einem Gewitter rettet sich der verwundete Siegmund in ihr Haus. Hunding fordert Siegmund zum Kampf, aber Sieglinde zeigt Siegmund heimlich das Siegesschwert Notung. Beide erkennen, dass sie Geschwister sind und werden verbotenerweise ein Liebespaar.

Was sie jedoch nicht wissen, ist, dass sie die Kinder des Göttervaters Wotan sind. Wotan weist seine Lieblingstochter, die Walküre Brünnhilde, an, Siegmund im Kampf gegen Hunding zu helfen. Doch Wotans eifersüchtige Ehefrau Fricka besteht darauf, Siegmund den Schutz zu entziehen. Wotan befiehlt Brünnhilde, Siegmund sterben zu lassen. Brünnhilde aber widersetzt sich ihrem Vater und hilft Siegmund im Kampf.
