About this listen

From Little Nell to Miss Havisham, Dickens’ Women tells the story of Charles Dickens’ life through his beloved characters. Cowritten and performed by Miriam Margolyes, best known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, this one-women show is a celebration of her infectious passion for Dickens’ work.

Taking on 23 different Dickensian characters, many of whom were inspired by real people such as Mary Hogwarth, Dickens' sister-in-law, Margolyes showcases her astonishing versatility as a performer.

Dickens’ Women delighted audiences across the world in 2012 as Margolyes took her Olivier nominated show on tour for the bicentenary of Dickens' birth.

Hearing dickens though Miriam’s knowledgable mind , is emotional, witty, and a little heartbreaking too.

Would have preferred it without the audience

Miriam Margoyles gives a fantastic performance. So talented. It is a live performance so there is audience clapping and laughing. I would have preferred a studio read performance.

Thoroughly Enjoyable - and Enlightening!

Marvellous Miriam Margolyes! Thoroughly entertaining and educational in the best possible way, I enjoyed the performance and learned a little more about Dickens the man through this evocation and celebration of the women in his stories.
Not any more enamoured of the man by any means as a result, but gained a great insight into the creation of his stories, particularly his female characters.
Definitely recommend this

Miriam Margolyes is marvellous

This performance should be part of the national curriculum. Beautiful performed and explains Dickens in a very simple way, cutting through the older style English.

Wonderful characterisation

Wonderful characterisation, which I know goes with the Turf, Dickens being the scriptwriter. Ms Margolyes gives a wonderful performance, she has selected her material with great care and intelligence. This an absolute joy to listen to.
