Thomas Mann, 6.6.1875 - 12.8.1955, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Erzählern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit ihm erreichte der moderne deutsche Roman den Anschluss an die Weltliteratur. Manns umfangreiches und vielschichtiges Werk hat eine weltweit kaum zu übertreffende Resonanz gefunden. Schon mit seinem ersten großen Roman, Buddenbrooks, wurde er bekannt und erhielt dafür 1929 den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Nach seinem Exil in den USA kehrte Mann 1952 nach Europa zurück und verstarb 1955 in Zürich.
