 Karl und Marie Fiala leben mit ihren zwei Kindern Franzl und Marie in einer kleinen Wohnung in Wien. Franzl ist Epileptiker, aber Karl will ihn nicht in eine Anstalt abgeben, deswegen schließt er bei Nachbar Schlesinger, einem Versicherungsmann, eine Lebensversicherung über einen mittelgroßen Geldbetrag ab, um im Falle seines Dahinscheidens Rücklagen für seine Familie und die Versorgung von Franzl zu bilden.

Tatsächlich erkrankt Karl schwer - die Ärzte sind ratlos und geben ihm nur noch ein paar Wochen. Im Sterbezimmer des Krankenhauses wird ihm von Schlesinger mitgeteilt, dass er im Falle seines frühzeitigen Todes - konkret gesprochen vor Vollendung des 65. Lebensjahres - keinen einzigen Groschen von der Versicherung ausgezahlt bekommt.
