About this listen

The last thing she remembers is seeing her friends die... Now it's her turn.

Eldritch and forgotten arcana wait within its vaults. Twisted accidents of magic prowl its halls. Sinister forces lure the unsuspecting deeper into death or madness. Its victims don't remember how they got there. No one remembers how to get out...

A good story hidden behind the wrong narrator

What did you like best about Depths of Madness? What did you like least?

Well defined characters, particularly the lead character who descends not only into a dungeon environment but also into madness as well. Without giving the story away, sometimes 'up' is 'down' in this book.

How could the performance have been better?

For me, the narrator was simply the wrong person for this book. An adult themed book sounding like it was being read as a children's story.

One of the male human(?) characters had a higher pitch voice than the female halfling. Everyone sounded like they were in nursery school. A dark story sounding like a child was reading it.

At times, the reader collides and stumbles with the words, pausing in odd places as if not realising the sentence continues on the next line. Another example of the childlike reading is an unusual habit (to me anyway) of pronouncing 'a' with a strong emphasis which sounded awkward to me (e.g. pronouncing "she had ay spear, ay sword and ay shield") rather than a short form 'a'. This may sound terribly pedantic, but it begins to grind.

I'm sure the narrator is highly talented... but is simply not the right tonality for this type of book

Did Depths of Madness inspire you to do anything?

I would read other books by the author but I couldn't listen to this narrator again... which is a shame as the rest of the 'dungeon' series are read by her.
