About this listen
At the Village Blend, Clare Cosi's best baristas may refer to a decaffeinated espresso as a "why bother?" but Clare knows a good percentage of her customers prefer the neutered brew. So when an old friend of her ex-husband develops the world's first botanically decaffeinated coffee bean and smuggles it into the country, Clare believes it's a business opportunity she needs to investigate... at least until the first dead body shows up.
With casualties piling up and a complicated blend of old and new loves muddying the waters, it's up to Clare to find the murderer before one of her near and dears takes the fall. Otherwise, her latest addition to the menu will prove to be a real buzz killer….

Need caffeine
I want to say I enjoyed this book and I did, sort of, when it finally got going, which unfortunately wasn't until nearly the end. I know the murder was supposed to be because of the coffee but there was just to much background information on the subject that it kind of lost the mystery. The story started well with a mugging and I thought we were off to a good start. Then it got bogged down with history of the characters, which I understand because you have to give motives for what it going to happen but it went into too much detail about coffee, the process it goes through and the different blends, it picked up towards the end when the bodies started to drop and the real investigation got under way. I liked the characters, especially when Clare had her elderly sidekicks help. I would visit this series again because I liked the characters but it probably won't be for a while.
When a man gets mugged in the alleyway behind her coffee shops Clare is surprised to find out it is her ex husband's old college friend. He is planning to do business with her and her ex husband by having them have the exclusive rights to sell his coffee. A coffee that naturally is caffeine free, something which is gaining popularity. He doesn't want to call the police but won't tell her why. So Clare afraid it was more an attempted murder than a mugging and with the victim looking very much like her ex husband, she starts to investigate why he would get attacked but have nothing stolen. Could it be over the existence of the coffee plant? Finding out gets her back in touch with old friends that have there own secrets to keep. Then a body is found and the police want to talk to her ex husband. The party showing off the new bean is interrupted with another dead body and Clare 's ex husband is once again wanted for questioning after having a very public fight with the man. It seems Clare's investigating is no longer about finding out what is going on but proving her ex husband innocent,
I liked the narrator, she does some good voices for the characters.
