Summary

Libya 1942 - Rommel's Africa Korps is sweeping across Northern Africa. The ragged Allied forces engage the enemy in brutal fire-fights on the desert sands. Meanwhile, the Allied commander-in-chief sends a coded message to the Prime Minister – the courier is First Officer Madeleine Rose, WRNS – codename Runefish.

When Runefish's plane is shot down deep behind enemy lines, GHQ must send in the commandos to pull her out. It looks like no more than a deadly fool's errand. Battle-hardened Sergeant Tom Caine is a first class soldier who struggles with obeying orders.

He must lead his small squad of specialist commandos into the hornet's nest – on a bloody mission that could change the outcome of the war….

WW2 Commando porn at its best

After reading Michael Asher’s previous fantastic book on his career I bought this- now - I’m not your sort of average fiction reader, but this is my humble opinion! WW2 Commando operations are the epitome of commando work, before thermal imaging, night vision satellite tech etc. The equipment, general tactics, and research were phenomenal.
Characters were straight out of the Commando comics, the authors detailed descriptions of mutilations from hand to hand and impact from ballistics made me think he was really enjoying writing those bits, and mental note not to upset the Scary monster😂

The reason I marked it down to a 4 for Story was because it was an overstretched two book story in my mind., felt like listening version of selection,. But great book to down load if your off on tour., and I did enjoy the bulk of it. Reckon my teenage son will love it.

So brutal & cruel at times I had to stop listening

Would you listen to Death or Glory: The Last Commando again? Why?

I am not sure I would listen again this book contains some very disturbing material. And in my humble opinion the author overplays the cliffhanger as a plot element.

What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Paul Thornley brings British military characters to life in a manner few other narrators ever achieve. In short he is the benchmark by which all others are to be judged, a superb narrator.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Blood guts then another huge helping of both.

Any additional comments?

This book contains some of the cruellest most sadistic violence I have ever encountered in a novel. I had to stop listening and take a break on more than one occasion and I am no shrinking violet!

Completely unbelievable

What was most disappointing about Michael Asher’s story?

The story line was just too far fetched . It belittled the bravery of those in the theatre of war in North Africa.
