Summary

1st September, 1939. As the mass evacuation takes place across Britain, thousands of children leave London for the countryside. But when three little girls step off the train to 'safety' only to go missing in less than 48 hours, the reality of separation becomes more urgent and more deadly for the families they left behind in the city.

In the chaos and uncertainty of war, Golden Age crime author Josephine Tey struggles with the prospect of change. As a cloud of suspicion falls across the small Suffolk village she has come to love, the conflict becomes personal, and events take a dark and sinister turn.

Blending a Golden Age mystery with the timeless fears of a child's abduction, Dear Little Corpses is an atmospheric snapshot of England in the early days of war.

Excellent

Don’t be fooled by the cosy crime covers to this series, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions and gripping suspense . Showing the prejudice and ignorance of the times (and sadly now). A true crime thriller and an outstanding forbidden love story

Excellent.

My first experience of a Nicola Upson novel and a narration by Sandra Duncan. I cannot praise either highly enough. Will search for more.

Gentle story

Slow to start with good characters and atmosphere. Nothing gory but very moving. A horrible concept and I wonder if it could have happened? There were so many children evacuated. A good twist.

Kept me hooked

It’s an interesting story with interesting characters and I definitely wanted to find out what happened. The narrator was very good - apart from just once when she mixed up her accents! I did find the constant use of “her lover” pretty irritating, just say her name! Anyway, a good listen and I liked the characters enough to get another one.

*Possible spoiler* Whoever wrote the Audible Summary - “when three little girls step off the train to 'safety' only to go missing in less than 48 hours” - obviously hasn’t read the book. And inadvertently gives away part of the plot.

Another great book in the series

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Well written, a story that keeps you guessing and as usual excellent narration.

A sad set of circumstances

I really enjoyed this although I found it quite sad. I loved hearing the retelling of what happened to evacuees in the war and the mentions of Colchester and Wilkin and Sons. But don’t expect a happy ending

The weaker link of the series

Very interesting subject and well written, but the murder element is the least convincing in the series. A bit more psychology behind the reasons for the murder element would have made a stronger ending. Excellent narration.
