About this listen

Thirteen-year-old Ava Bonney possesses an unusual intellect far beyond her years. While her friends play, Ava's fascination lies in the intricate process of animal decomposition, studying roadkill found in the streets around her home.

But, one night, Ava's secret nocturnal routine takes a chilling turn when she stumbles upon the lifeless body of fellow schoolmate, Mickey Grant.

As Detective Seth Delahaye takes charge of the perplexing case, Ava refuses to sit idle. Determined and resourceful, she embarks on a daring quest to unveil the truth behind the string of chilling deaths plaguing her community.

Armed with her unique skills and unrivalled local knowledge, Ava becomes an unlikely force in the race to apprehend the elusive killer before more lives are claimed.©2024 Marie Tierney (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

Brilliant Protagonist

What a stellar offering from Maria Tierney. Readers would want to be Ava, be terrified for her and cry for her. Maria’s writing breaths life into characters, places and horrific events. I really hope she keeps writing these books as she has a real talent for that. Please don’t miss this one if you love good books with brilliant protagonists.

Book of the year for me

Absolutely marvellous. Unique. Dark but not salacious. Moving. Funny. Expertly narrated. If you don’t love this, you are missing a soul.

Fantastic debut novel

Really enjoyed this quirky debut novel and what a debut. An enjoyable original and well thought out plot, that will keep you guessing and enthralled. Great rounded characters, especially Ava, who you will love. I would strongly recommend reading this one and hope to see many more books by this author to come.

Fabulous difference

Lovely to read a book about a smart girl who likes odd things. A fab story, funny in places and I just loved the lead character. More stories with her please!
