Summary

There are two sides to every story.

Revisit the mean streets and smoke-filled back-alleyways of 1950s Glasgow in this thrilling reissue of New York Times Bestselling author Bill Knox's first Thane & Moss novel.

A classic from one of the godfathers of Tartan Noir, this edge-of-your-seat thriller tells a tense tale of a crime reporter turned criminal. Armed with a gun, driven by desperation, and possessing insider knowledge of a potential big score, he daringly executes a factory payroll hold-up.

And that’s when his whole world begins to fall apart.

Detectives Thane and Moss embark on a manhunt, and a gripping game of cat and mouse unfolds in a dual narrative that plunges listeners into the heart of a bygone era in Scottish crime, with every twist leading the detectives towards a pulse-pounding showdown with a criminal who has nothing left to lose.

Rediscover a pivotal piece of Tartan Noir history and experience the raw reality of a crime gone wrong in this thrilling reissue of the first Thane & Moss novel, originally published as 'Deadline for a Dream'. Includes an all-new foreword by multi-million selling Scottish crime fiction author, JD Kirk.

Fantastic!

Angus King's narration is always exceptional, and once again he's delivered!
Many thanks to J D Kirk for resurrecting these stories, and making the audio version available.
Different to many other books, as you find the villain is almost the main character, you aren't sure who's side you're on throughout most of the book. I'll be starting the second book in the morning!

Fantastic early Tartan Noir

I’d not heard of Bill Knox until JD Kirk mentioned that they were being recorded. As he’s always given great recommendations I thought I’d give it a go. As usual fantastic narration from Angus King. I really enjoyed the book. Having just finished the Alan Parks Detective Harry McCoy books, I’m enjoying Scottish Crime from an earlier time. This was excellent. So not only a great story but also my interest was piqued with how Police dealt with crime from that era. I also enjoyed the storytelling from not just the detective’s angle but also the criminal’s. Looking forward to the next book.

A great listen.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Yes, the story does seem a bit dated now but it is a story of its time, long before technological developments in policing. It is a forerunner to our now abundant wealth of Scottish crime fiction novels. Angus King's narration was, as always, just brilliant at bringing the characters to life.

Northwest Listener

I really enjoyed this book, it was quick and snappy, plenty of intrigue. The murderer was identified early in the story, how the police worked trying to identify and the deceptions the killer put in place. As ever fab narration by Angus King.

Fast pace

It was an exciting story at the start, but seemed to drag on at the end. I felt like giving up with over an hour still to hear.

Narration brilliant

As a fan of ‘whodunnit’ novels, this didn’t engage me as much. If you like the Columbo-style story where you already know the villain then it works. The setting and characters are interesting and the author creates a good picture of the era.
Angus King always entertains and because if his narration I confined to the end.
Are all these stories written with this style - with the perp identified straightaway? If so they’re not for me.

Soooo boring! 😴

Other than the brilliant Angus King, the story was so slow, predictable and boring. Maybe it’s just not my thing, but normally love this kind of book.
