Summary

London’s Slough House is where disgraced MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their washed-up careers. Now they have a chance at redemption. An old Cold War-era spy is found dead on a bus outside Oxford, far from his usual haunts. Slough House’s head honcho, the despicable, irascible Jackson Lamb is convinced Dickie Bow was murdered.

As the agents dig into the circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets that seem to lead back to a man named Alexander Popov, who is either a Soviet bogeyman or the most dangerous man in the world. How many more people will have to die to keep those secrets buried?

Another outstanding book by Mick Herron

loved this story. slowly working my way through the series. Leaves readers guessing until the very end, when nothing is at it seems.

Intriguing fascinating & great narration

2nd book in the series & I’ve already downloaded the third. Mick Herron with his cynical writing & Sean Barretts narration are a fantastic combination . The characters are like people we all know & have met .

Dead Lions

I have only recently discovered Nick Heron
and have thoroughly enjoyed the first two books featuring the Slow Horse characters
and their intriguing activities. I look forward to the subsequent books.

Good story. Superb narration.

The Slow Horses are so vividly brought to life by the writing of Mick Herron and the superb narration of Sean Barrett, who’s world weary tone is perfect. The characterisations and descriptive writing is sublime at times. Doesn’t get a 5-star only because, for me, the story goes a bit wild by the end. Thoroughly recommended, though.

I just couldn’t get on with the narration

Love the storyline and the character development. But the narrator lets the book down. Almost identical voice for every character. Poor.

Brilliant narrator

Love these books and the intense, flawed and utterly recognisable characters who are the Slow Horses. The story was good and cleverly pulled together. I love the fact that you are left to make connections without everything being spelled out and over simplified. The narrator is perfect and does an excellent job of depicting each character and making them instantly recognisable. Mick Herron is a wonderful discovery.

firstly a slow burner but wait !

another good listen and I will carry on with the series, real spooks doing real work, although it was written 10 years ago there are a lot of things that are still relevant ( " we are friends now aren't we " referring to the Russians ) not being one of them, this is in a way historically recording political stance, well written with all the twists and red herrings you could manage

Great story set in London

I love Sean Barrett’s narration, he brings the characters to life even though I’m picturing the actors from the TV adaptation in my mind

The Slow Horses are maxed out.

Would you listen to Dead Lions again? Why?

Having listened to the original book in the series, I had to find out what appalling indignities Jackson Lamb could inflict on his staff.

What other book might you compare Dead Lions to, and why?

I suppose the subject matter is comparable to Le Carre, totally different style though.

What about Seán Barrett’s performance did you like?

Gripping, especially considering that the characters are pretty evenly split between the sexes.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Loved it, great trepidation felt as it reached the end though.
