In 22 Strophen erzählt Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882) von des großen Mannes Geburt, seiner Liebe zur Dakota Minnehaha, seinem friedvollen Wirken für sein Volk – und von seinem Tod. Nie wurde poetischer von den amerikanischen Ureinwohnern erzählt als in diesem Epos – das übrigens Antonin Dvorak zum zweiten Satz seiner Symphonie Nr. 9 "Aus der neuen Welt" inspirierte!
