About this listen

A secluded island. A missing woman. An impossible choice.

Detective Inspector Karen Eiken Hornby is not the only person to have returned to her native island nation, Doggerland, after years abroad. Following a ten-year hiatus, Luna has chosen to secretly record her comeback album where she was born and raised. Spirits are high among her team at the wrap party, though Karen is less than impressed with the simpering singer. The next morning, Luna is nowhere to be found.

Nothing goes unnoticed in the tight-knit community—certainly not the arrival, or disappearance, of a world-famous singer. So, while the rest of the force is frantically searching for a suspect whose brutal attacks on women are increasing in intensity and frequency, a reluctant Karen is tasked with discreetly looking into Luna's whereabouts.

As time ebbs away so does the possibility of finding Luna alive, while Karen faces seemingly impossible choices, ones that could spell life or death, both for herself and others.

Good plot and characters

I like this series, hope there will be another one soon. Love Doggerland and its customs too.

Good story, narrator not so good

Did not like the narrator at all which was a disappointment as I had been looking forward to continuing the series

Disappointed with choice of narrator

This release really needed the original narrator, I missed Hattie and I felt that Karen was losing her marbles for much of the book, which was obviously not the narrator's fault but that of the author, but the narrator amplified this feeling and for the first part of the story creates a feeling of gloom, which, it has to be said, she was truly fabulous at doing.

The story itself does pick up later in the book and becomes far less annoying but even then, the narrator still makes things feel gloomy, I was probably just expecting too much as I was very keen to listen to this book so I'd recommend listening to the sample and seeing what you think , I pre-ordered it unknowing of the future narrator, I would probably still have ordered it though, I very much enjoyed books 1 and 2, this one is still a good book, even though Karen is very annoying in places.

Mixed bag

As with all Doggerland stories this is a great romp. Complex and layered, with interesting characters and good back stories. However, hugely struggled with the narration. It wasn’t great and distracted from the story a lot. Made it much less enjoyable. If there’s more in this brilliant series I wouldn’t buy if it was this narrator again.

I couldn’t listen to this audiobook

This is the 3rd book in a trilogy and Books 1 & 2 were great stories and excellently narrated by Hattie Ladbury. Sadly the narrator changed to Joan Walker and her voice is so monotonal and irritating that I cannot listen to it. I only got to chapter 3. I’m usually very flexible with narrators but this is just awful. It’s particularly annoying as it’s the last in a great trilogy, with the first 2 books being compelling, suspenseful and thought provoking. I have given this story 3 stars but that’s only because I had to give a rating to be able to submit this review. I will buy the last book and read it myself, but why does audible do this? Can’t they contract one person for three books? It’s so disappointing.

Great story, terrible narrator.

I've liked the other books and was sad to hear of the passing of the original narrator. The replacement is not good though. Her inflection is so off, she emphasises the wrong words and speaks in a faux lyrical tone which is almost unbearable to listen too. I only persevered because the story was good.

New narrator makes this difficult to follow but stick with it

I was really struggling after the first few chapters of this third book in the series. The narrator has changed and it has lost all the charm and unique location of the first books. Names are pronounced differently and the cadence and tone, particularly when narrating a dialogue section is almost unbearable. The scandi vibe is completely lost, with some characters even having a Yorkshire accent now - inexplicable. Someone in the reviews suggested speeding up the narration, i tried 1.15 but it was a little fast, 1.10 was perfect and did help to alleviate some of the bizarre narration choices. I stuck with this as I was invested in the characters but it was disappointing overall

Thrilling

A brilliant 3rd book in the series. If reading on audible, and you have loved and listened to the previous narrator I recommend playing on +.15 of your normal speed. Struggled at the start but found my way. Best series in a long time.

Wow.

Wow. "Cruel Tides" is one of the best mysteries I have ever read - Maria Adolfsson is a master storyteller. Immersive, fast-paced and addictively good, "Cruel Tides" takes your breath away and you simply can't put the book down.

Disappointing narrator

1,2 & 3 are fantastic stories that I really enjoyed reading. I loved Hattie Ladbury’s narration. So sad to learn she has died.
The new narrator was awful and completely spoiled number 3.
