Knowledge is power, and when it gets in the wrong hands it can be lethal. Alchemy and murder combine in a gripping race against time from the CWA award-winning author of The Seeker.

Aberdeen, 1631. University librarian Robert Sim takes receipt of a gift of books recently arrived from overseas, mysterious works on alchemy and hermetics - the pursuit of ancient knowledge. By nightfall he has been brutally murdered.

His colleague and good friend Alexander Seaton is left with the task of hunting for clues as to his killer's motive, as well as locating the missing books. What did Sim discover in the package, and what makes these books so dangerous?©2011 S. G. MacLean

A great story, well written

Shona MacLean (S. G. MacLean) never disappoints and her meticulous fidelity to both geographic and sense of place and time is exceptional. She spends generous time in her material research and even walking the routes her characters take. Now having greatly enjoyed listening to the first three Alexander Seaton novels, I can understand her stated preference to Alexander Seaton over Damian Seeker in the equally gripping Commonwealth Seeker novels. Alexander Seaton is complex, uncertain sometimes, fallible, but equally a man to like as he so frequently liked in the novels. This is an engrossing novel and whilst listeners may land upon the character that is behind lethal events, even this character has some redeeming qualities. I am never at a loss when listening to Shona MacLean's novels. Without spoilers, this novel will create a degree of anxiety for Alexander Seaton that niggles away as you listen by his side through the events and relationship interactions. For those who give the Seaton novels the time there are many riches and oodles of pleasure. Crawford Logan is masterful in his performance of this novel, as he was the two before. With only one Seaton novel left to me, I wonder where I will go then. Fully recommended a listen.
