Summary

A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING MATT DAMON, JUDE LAW AND GWYNETH PALTROW

One of the BBC's 100 Novels that shaped our world.

'An outstanding thriller which has deservedly become a classic' THE TIMES

'Ripley - amoral, hedonistic and charming - is a genuinely original creation' DAILY TELEGRAPH

'I'm a huge Highsmith fan. If there's one book I wish I'd written, it's The Talented Mr Ripley' SARAH WATERS

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL CRIME NOVELS EVER WRITTEN

Tom Ripley travels to Italy with a commission to coax a prodigal young American back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of Dickie Greenleaf. He wants to be like him - exactly like him. Suave, agreeable and utterly amoral, Ripley will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal.

The Talented Mr. Ripley serves as an unforgettable introduction to this smooth confident man, whose talent for murder and self-invention is chronicled in four subsequent Ripley novels.

Critic reviews

"Precisely plotted, stylishly written, and kept alert by an icy wit. Streets ahead of the conventional thriller: a cool little classic of its kind." (Evening Standard)

Wonderful narration. Incredible book.

It's taken too many years to finally read this book. I have always loved the film, and this was addicting and fascinating to listen to. The narrator is incredible, very highly recommended.

Captivating story

I enjoyed the complexity of the characters and the suspense. First fiction I have listened to for a number of years

The fractured clever mind

excellent narration, intonation and Italian language. Kept me guessing and wondering how well the author got into the mind of Mr Ripley

Classic that stands well time

Great voice, almost like an audio movie. Felt like you were there, in Italy. Splendid italian accent.

Incomparable plotting; mediocre reading

Highsmith's brilliant story and superb characters, especially antihero Ripley, make for addictive listening despite lacklustre and rather wooden reading.

Suspenseful well written murder tale.

I like the reader’s voice….. I had seen the film and realised sometime into the book that the film did not follow book. This was my first audible and could not put it down.I don’t know if the film helped or hindered my experience but I did visualise Tom and Marge as portrayed in the film by actor Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow. A good experience to get used to audible books.

Ripley's anxiety makes every scene a page-turner

Didn't know much about this series before I started this book and glad that I didn't. Each scene is believably woven into the next so that the endings all fit together perfectly. Looking forward to Ripley's continued story. By the way, didn't really like any of the characters, including Ripley, but couldn't stop listening anyway.

Evergreen

What a wonderful classic - Highsmith is as relevant today as she was so many years ago. Machiavellian and intriguing - superb book and great movie too.

Tense and dark thriller in a plush setting

I really enjoyed this book. The story twists but is tight and well written. It captures its time and place well. The characters have enough depth and the protagonist is one I both love and hate (which keeps one interested).
It is well narrated and it isn’t a long or arduous listen. I can’t recommend more if this genre is your thing

Fantastic

Got to be one of the top 5 books ever - great narration, twisting plot, couldn't turn it off...
