Summary

Powerful character arcs create powerful stories.

Have you written a story with an exciting concept and interesting characters - but it just isn't grabbing the attention of readers or agents? It's time to look deeper into the story beats that create realistic and compelling character arcs. Internationally published, award-winning novelist K.M. Weiland shares her acclaimed method for achieving memorable and moving character arcs in every book you write.

By applying the foundation of the three-act story structure and then delving even deeper into the psychology of realistic and dynamic human change, Weiland offers a beat-by-beat checklist of character arc guidelines that flexes to fit any type of story.

This comprehensive book will teach you:

  • How to determine which arc - positive, negative, or flat - is right for your character.
  • Why you should never pit plot against character. Instead, learn how to blend story structure and character development.
  • How to recognize and avoid the worst pitfalls of writing novels without character arcs.
  • How to hack the secret to using overarching character arcs to create amazing trilogies and series.
  • And much more!

Gaining an understanding of how to write character arcs is a game-changing moment in any author's pursuit of the craft.

Bring your characters to unforgettable and realistic life - and take your stories from good to great!

Plenty of food for thought

I found this book chock full of great points and instruction to ensure my next story is now running away with itself, going nowhere.

Personally I think it could do with some pdf notes to help guide the journey but that aside I now have the confidence to write character arcs and also analyse other stories for ideas.

Highly recommend!

An excellent tool

This wonderful book has given me a useful touchstone to use while planning and outlining my fiction. I think so highly of it that I intend to buy the print copy so I can have it in front of me while I work. The audiobook narrator did an excellent job, too.

Excellent and Thought Provoking

As someone with a long standing idea for a book but little confidence in my ability to structure it well or develop characters well this was a real source of strength and confidence. I've read a few books on writing and structure but this has been the best. Prompting me to lose any sense of a false dichotomy between the two. That's one of the main considerations I took from it but it's primarily a wonderful book on character development and construction that I'll definitely listen to a few times as I go.

Thorough examination of the topic

Starts with the basics but then delves deeper. Discusses positive, flat and negative arcs. Gave me additional insight regarding various arc related questions in the last part.

You either want to take notes or get the book edition too, to access the checklists for each act.

Provides examples based on popular stories.

Content has been boiled down to the essence, without creating a boring read.

Speedy narration, needed to slow to the player.

This is a keeper for future reference.

By the audible & Kindle ed. in a package because..

I read the reviews first and was unsure of getting this book. I took the advice from another review, before I bought it ,that you'd also need the kindle for all the lists and tips (because I'd just got another audible book that had the same issue). It was the right decision. I slowed down the speed to 0.95x (sometimes 0.9x) as it does go a little fast in places.
The information in the book is brilliant. I learnt a lot listening to the audible in full and now I'm going to go back through the Kindle version to develop my characters. I thought I'd already read good books on writing novels and this was just an addition for background listening, but it should have been one of my key titles from the start. Now my characters seem lacking without implementating the arcs and methods detailed and broken down in this book. I'm so relieved I bought this. 5* for sure

Kinda like most other books on this topic

I suggest you read 'Save the Cat" instead for an easy listen, or 'Stein on Writing' which is about writing in general.

This book is written like the author came across some secret that nobody else knows about, and the sharing of this secret comes across as both smug, excited, confident, and influencer-like. The narrator conveys this beautifully in all its glory.

The book feels very long and it seems to get longer the more you listen to it. I still have 1 hour left and I'm hoping it's mostly end credits and listing of URL's for further info.

I'm sure she knows her stuff because she's worked as an editor on GoT. Sadly that may not be that impressive as we all know how badly that ended.
The problem is her writing and the style that she chose. She sounds like an influencer. She seems to lack real confidence in her own words so she tacks on a fake persona to make it sound more exciting.
It doesn't work for more than a few pages at a time.
