About this listen

For the first time, discover the unedited truth about the Duggars, the traditional Christian family that captivated the nation on TLC’s hit show 19 Kids and Counting. Jill Duggar and her husband Derick are finally ready to share their story, revealing the secrets, manipulation, and intimidation behind the show in this “no-holds barred” (People) instant New York Times bestseller.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines. She didn’t protest the strict model of patriarchy that her family followed, which declares that men are superior, that women are expected to be wives and mothers and are discouraged from attaining a higher education, and that parental authority over their children continues well into adulthood, even once they are married.

But as Jill got older, married Derick, and they embarked on their own lives, the red flags became too obvious to ignore.

For as long as they could, Jill and Derick tried to be obedient family members—but now they’re raising a family of their own, and they’re done with the secrets. Thanks to time, tears, therapy, and blessings from God, they have the strength to share their journey. Theirs is a “complicated, remarkably relatable story of faith and family loyalty” (Salon) and a moving example of how to find healing through honesty.

Love the honesty

Really well performed. Love how honest this book is throughout. Gives some real insight into a world that has always been chosen what is displayed by TV crews

Great first book

I really hope there’s a second book, that’s how much I enjoyed this one. I’ve watched the duggars since the early days on tlc, living here in the U.K I’m not religious at all, but found watching the series fascinating, often wondering how they could all be so perfect. This has given an honest insight from Jill about her experience, moving forward id like to hear how life is now, her hopes for her family. Will she be as ‘controlling’ with her babies? How would her and Derek feel if one of their babies had opposing views to them? Although not religious myself, I have brought up my now adult son to think for himself, to be curious about the world, other people beliefs and preferences, to not judge others but to treat all people kindly. That is ‘my religion’ I suppose, simply to be kind and understanding.

Brilliant insight to the real story of the Duggers

I could put the earphone down, listening to Jill herself made it all the more real. You could hear the emotion in some of the stories. Just a daughter trying to find the best way through life. I ope she writes more and I feel it’s important to lift the lid of how controlling these people can be.

Important to tell the truth

I’ll start off by saying that this does appear to be written in pretty much Jill’s own words, so it doesn’t read like an experienced author wrote it. It’s very much the storyline which delivers all of the 5 star score. It sets the record straight about IBPL, her father and Josh but don’t expect any negative or significant details about other family members. I always looked up to the family so its horrifying but important to finally understand the truth. It shows how extremely deceptive appearances can be. This details a family with abnormal levels of sin and manipulation against each other. Don’t expect this to be normal family drama and it’s pretty hard reading at times. It’s horrific what the children were being exposed to within their family environment and from risky individuals outside their family. It’s clear their welfare was low priority compared to image and income. It’s worth a read for anyone who watched the family show as it shows how we were all misled.
