Summary
Just returned from years overseas on a secret mission, Albert Campion is relaxing in his bath when his servant Lugg and a lady of unmistakably aristocratic bearing appear in his flat carrying the corpse of a woman.
At first Campion is unwilling to get involved, but he is forced to bring his powers of protection to bear on the case, and to solve not only the mystery of the murdered woman but also the alarming disappearance of some well-known art treasures.

narrator!
Allingham always surprises... somehow. I always know I've had enough at the end but that I'll return to her again for the quirky view.

Not his best
But wonderfully narrated as always from David Thorpe - and enough interesting period detail to be fun.

Excellent book that keeps you guessing right to the end
The reader brings the characters alive. He is a pleasure to listen to. The story complexity ensures you are kept guessing until the very end.

narrator spoiled it
The high falsetto voice chosen for Campion made me visualise him as a pantomime dame

Terrible Narrator
Great story, love Campion stories. This is ruined by absolutely dreadful narration. Buy the book instead.

Another delightful story
Having just rediscovered Margery Allingham, I find myself gripped by her excellent story telling. Plenty to keep you listening as the tale twist and turns. I have come to terms with the narration, not the best but, not enough to put me off downloading more of Albert Campion.

Brilliantly narrated, this tale is thoroughly engrossing. Read in order, the Campion series is very addictive.

Terrible narration
I couldn’t stand to listen for more than a couple of hours, The narrator was over the top, with a weirdly falsetto voice for a main character. Recommend trying a sample before you buy the audio book version.

Part spy, war and mystery novel.
Another wonderful addition to the Allingham ouevre with the indomitable Albert Campion beautifully voiced by David Thorpe. His characterisation is whimsical yet sharp-edged. While not strictly a classic mystery, based as the story is during war time and involving espionage, the characters are evinced magnificently by the reader, with the usual beautiful writing of an underappreciated author from the Golden Age of the classic mystery and whodunit novels. Allingham ranks with the very best of her generation.
