About this listen

Humans have been in the stars far longer than Van originally thought—and they've been busy.

Not every visitor to or from Earth has good intentions, and the Peacemakers are faced with an uncomfortable reality. The Earth is about to meet aliens. Some of the aliens are bringing goods to trade. And among those items are weapons.

When a secret cabal of humans who want to exploit the Earth is revealed, Van has to decide how and where to fight this threat. Along the way, he reveals a secret history that began in the Great War—and ends with mass chaos on his home planet.

Van won't let that happen—at least not without a fight, and to hold back the gears of war, he's going to need a lot of help. With Torina at his side, the crew faces a decision that will change the future of the stars themselves and challenge the Guild, the Earth, and the Equal Grasp as the universe gets smaller with each contact between humans and aliens.

How can Van manage the clash, save Earth, and deliver peace?

If he can, what will it cost him?

The build up of the last few books and this ending - fantastic

Really enjoyed this book … great pace and storyline development. It did cut about a little but it all added to the whole ….

Impact

Superb writing, cracking storyline. Made Ryanair delay tolerable to a degree. Keep the books coming! Love them!

Just superb

I can't remember exactly how I came to start Backyard Starship and, on the title alone, I'd have had fairly low expectations. But, wow. Book by book, character by character, the authors have build a universe you believe (however unlikely a sentient desk might seem) and protaganists you really start to care about. Narration is excellent - Kafer needs to be really commended on his performance.

This particular book is one of the heavier ones - as befits the title - and, while there is much humour, you get an ominous sense of ,,, something ,,,, approaching.

And, when it arrives, it hits hard. I'm not ashamed to admit I got a bit teary. It's not a spoiler to suggest that a siege/assault involving most of Van's wide circle of associates will have ramifications but I was surprised by the outcome and it'll weigh on Van for some time and you share this.

This brings one long running plot point to a close but Van still has much to do and, while it won't be easy, it's hard to imagine anyone better suited to do it and bear the consequences.

Being on the next episode - the wait will be painful.
