About this listen

Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar removed the spectre of invasion and England is now free to seek conquests and colonies in the furthest reaches of the world. Captain Kydd joins an expedition to take Dutch-held Cape Town, a strategic imperative to secure the rich trade-route to India. But even if the British can defeat the enemy and take possession of the capital, there is still more fighting to be done. Kydd and his men must defend the fragile colony from attacks by the enemy from all sides, while braving the wild beasts and hostile environment of Africa's vast and savage hinterland.

Boys Own adventure

This is the kind of book and experience that is missing in today's class room the Narrator brings the characters to live and breaths pace into every line.
Outstanding and enjoyable

Slightly more of a slow-burner but still excellent

This episode retains many of the traits that we have come to expect from Julian Stockwin,. It is thoroughly researched without being overbearing, beautifully described and characterised superbly by Christian Rodska. The usual rich cast of characters are once again blended seamlessly against a background of real historical events.

Kydd's adventures this time see him more on land this time and the battle descriptions are excellent showing that the author is more than just a naval buff! Seeing Kydd and particularly the mercurial Renzi immersed into the birth of empire adds to the atmosphere.

This one didn't grip me all the way through like most of the others have but builds to an excellent conclusion that makes it yet another book well worth listening to in this series.

Not for Land Lubbers

A gripping seafaring story skilfully narrated. Easy to get into the story if your not a land lubber!

An interesting and an engaging history lesson

I enjoy historical fiction as a way of engaging with what can, for me, be a dry subject. This story covers events that I knew little about and hadn't really thought about. Whilst understanding that the tale is fictional, I like to believe that in outline the 'character' of how Empire was won is based around facts.

Julian Stockwin, & Christian Rodska do it again !

Would you listen to Conquest again? Why?

I am listening to all of the 'Kydd' novels and would certainly listen to them all again

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stockwin relates the period with conviction and suspense, the interaction between Kydd and Renzi is excellent !

Which character – as performed by Christian Rodska – was your favourite?

In an age of danger and lack of regard for human life, the novels create awe and suspense, Christian gives each character his or her own distinct voice, so you are never at a loss who it is, superb !

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I am of the opinion that Christian Rodska is one of, if not the best narrator of audio books in the English language, and I buy books because he is narrating them, and always find I have problems putting the book down because of that

Any additional comments?

The 'Kydd' novels are leaders in the art of the 'Historic Naval ' books and if this is your 'Bag' then be assured you will not be disappointed

Excellent

If you want to get this it is well worth having. It is slow in parts and labours in detail and is not quite as good as past books.

Having said that the end is brilliant and I eagerly wait for the next book.

great adventure

Great adventure, well read and enjoyable.
Starting to get the formula Stockwin is using and gets a little predictable, but nonetheless very enjoyable.

Great sea tale. One of the best

Julian Stockwin should be very proud in writing this tale of the adventures of Kydd and Renzi. The narration is first class, gripping.
Now onto the next in the series, Betrayal.
