About this listen
Before Kionne McGhee became a State Representative, author, professor, husband, and father, he had to survive a harsh reality. Growing up in the tough Naranja Housing Projects of South Miami, McGhee balanced being the man of the house with the pressures of street life. Petty crimes, skipping school, and living fast defined his early years.
As the oldest son of six, McGhee faced the challenge of enforcing rules at home while struggling under them at school. Labeled emotionally handicapped, with a low IQ, poor GPA, and dismal SAT score, his future seemed bleak. The odds were against him: a 0% chance of surviving past 21.
Determined to change his fate, McGhee embarked on a journey of self-transformation. He discovered that the American Dream isn't materialistic or exclusive; it's about seizing a second chance. With this belief, McGhee defied expectations. Once labeled a failure, he now holds degrees from Howard University and Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and authored "A Mere I Can is American." As a former Assistant State Attorney, he is now the Founding Partner of the Kionne L. McGhee Law Group.
In 2012, McGhee was elected Florida State Representative, District 117, and in 2014, he became the Ranking Member of the Florida House Civil Justice Subcommittee. He was named a “Superhero” by Children of Inmates, Inc. in 2016, the same year he published "Conquering Hope." McGhee's story of resilience and success has earned him numerous awards and recognition, making him a role model and advocate for justice.
“I am absolutely convinced that the only way to save ourselves is to save ourselves.” ~ Kionne McGhee
